Naousa doesn't look like a place built for cars. Cobbled lanes wind past plane trees and rushing water, and the real reward sits above the town, where the road climbs into Vermio. Picture leaving the square by the Arapitsa stream, dropping through gears as the switchbacks tighten, and arriving an hour later at Seli with the whole Imathia plain spread out behind you. This is exactly the kind of riding a motorcycle was made for, and it's why so many travellers choose to rent a motorcycle in Naousa instead of relying on infrequent buses.
Between the old town's narrow streets, scarce parking and the mountain roads just beyond the edge of town, a car becomes more of a burden than a help here. A scooter or small motorcycle slips through Naousa's tight corners easily, and the same bike that gets you a coffee in the old quarter can carry you up to Nymfaio or across the plain to Vergina and Pella without a second thought. With day-trip distances mostly in the 20–50km range, a 125–300cc bike is the sweet spot — enough power for the mountain grades, light enough to enjoy in traffic.
For a moped up to 50cc, category AM is enough, and the minimum age is 16. Anything from 125cc up requires the matching motorcycle licence — A1, A2 or A depending on engine size and power — and riders must be at least 18. A standard car licence won't cover you on a scooter or motorcycle here. Non-EU visitors should bring an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence, and rental shops will usually ask for a deposit, held on a credit card or in cash, with the amount set by the operator.
A 50–125cc scooter runs around 20–28 EUR per day in low season, rising to roughly 30–45 EUR in high season. Bigger 300cc+ motorcycles cost more, and larger touring or naked bikes above 500cc can reach 45–70 EUR a day at the peak.
July and August are high season, with the warmest weather, the busiest roads and the highest prices — book a few weeks ahead if you're travelling then. November to March is low season, with many shops offering their cheapest rates but also shorter opening hours given the mountain climate. May, June, September and October sit comfortably in between, with mild temperatures and easier availability, making them a smart middle ground for both price and riding conditions.
Greece drives on the right, and helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any scooter or motorcycle — enforcement is strict. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on open roads and up to 130 km/h on motorways, though smaller-engine bikes may be capped lower. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but motorcyclists and newly licensed riders face a stricter 0.2 g/l. Keep to paved roads, since rental insurance almost never covers dirt tracks or off-road riding, and always carry your licence, IDP and rental papers with you.
