Lefkada rewards anyone willing to leave the tour bus behind. Picture threading down the switchbacks toward Porto Katsiki, white cliffs dropping to turquoise water on either side, or catching the late sun at Cape Lefkada where the lighthouse marks the edge of the Ionian. A motorbike gets you to both in the same afternoon, with stops for coffee in Agios Nikitas along the way — a kind of freedom the ferry crowds and rental cars rarely manage.
The island's charm is scattered across a coastline and a mountainous interior with barely any public transport connecting them. Roads are narrow, winding and often unpaved near the beaches, so a two-wheeler slips through where a car struggles to find parking. Traffic around Lefkada Town and the coastal villages stays light even in summer, and pulling a scooter onto the gravel above a cliffside viewpoint is a lot easier than reversing a rental car back up a one-lane track.
For a 50cc scooter, a category AM licence is enough, with a minimum age of 16, though most rental shops set their own higher minimum and may want to see how long you've held your licence. Anything from 125cc up requires a matching motorcycle category — A1, A2 or A — and riders must be at least 18. A standard car licence does not cover scooters or motorbikes in Greece, so don't expect it to be accepted. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Rental companies will also ask for a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount varying by operator and vehicle.
A 50cc scooter runs roughly 20-25 EUR per day in low season and climbs to 35-45 EUR in high season. If you'd rather have more power for the mountain roads, a 125cc-300cc motorbike costs around 45-70 EUR per day.
High season runs July through August, when demand is highest and prices peak. Low season stretches from November to March, though many rental shops close entirely over these months rather than simply lowering their rates. The sweet spot is May-June or September-October: shops are open, roads are quieter, and prices sit well below the summer peak. If you're travelling in high season, book a few weeks ahead to avoid missing out on the model you want.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any scooter or motorbike, and police enforcement is strict, with real fines behind it. Speed limits are 50 km/h in towns and villages, 90 km/h on open roads, and up to 110-130 km/h on faster roads, though Lefkada's mountain and coastal routes rarely allow that kind of speed anyway. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but drops to 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists, so it's best to treat riding and drinking as mutually exclusive. Keep in mind that rental insurance almost always excludes unpaved roads and beach access tracks, so once you leave the tarmac you're riding uninsured.
