Larissa doesn't look like a motorcycle town at first glance — it's a flat, easy-going city on the Pineios River, more famous for its university crowd than its scenery. But that's exactly the point. Larissa is the launchpad. Within two hours in any direction you can be riding hairpin bends up to the monasteries of Meteora, tracing the river gorge through Tempi Valley, or climbing toward the mythical slopes of Mount Olympus. Base yourself here, and a single day trip can turn into a proper loop through some of mainland Greece's best riding roads.
This is why so many travellers choose to rent a motorcycle in Larissa rather than rely on buses or a car. The city itself is simple to navigate on two wheels, with wide, flat streets and none of the chaos of Athens or Thessaloniki. But it's really a base camp: public transport to Meteora, Olympus or Pelion is slow and infrequent, while a rented bike lets you string together two or three stops in a day and actually enjoy the winding roads a car just can't. Whether you're after a scooter for the riverside promenade or something bigger for the mountains, Larissa rewards riders who want more than one destination per outing.
The licence you need depends on the engine size. A 50cc moped needs at least category AM, while anything 125cc and above requires the matching motorcycle category — A1, A2 or A. A car licence alone won't cover you on a scooter in Greece. The minimum age is generally 16 for AM mopeds and 18 for the motorcycle categories, though many rental companies set their own higher minimum and may ask for a minimum licence-holding period. Non-EU visitors should bring an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence, and expect to leave a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the exact amount varying by operator and vehicle.
A 125cc scooter typically runs EUR 20–28 per day in low season and EUR 35–55 per day in high season. If you'd rather tackle Olympus or Pelion on something bigger, a 300–650cc adventure or touring bike suited to those routes costs around EUR 60–90 per day.
High season runs July to August, when prices peak and the best bikes get booked up early — reserve ahead if you're travelling then. Low season, November to March, brings the lowest rates but also colder mountain roads around Olympus and Pelion, so many riders prefer the shoulder months for comfort as much as price.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any moped, scooter or motorcycle, and police enforcement is strict. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on open roads, and up to 130 km/h on motorways, with lower limits for smaller-engine bikes. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but tightens to 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists. Always carry your licence, IDP and rental papers with you, and keep to paved roads — insurance almost always excludes dirt tracks and beaches.
