Kythnos rarely tops anyone's list of Cycladic islands, and that's exactly why it rewards a closer look. Rent a motorcycle here and you can ride from the harbour at Merichas across the hills to the whitewashed lanes of Chora in twenty minutes, then carry on to soak in the thermal waters at Loutra before the day is done. There's no crowd management, no queueing for a bus that may not come — just you, the coastline, and a bike that goes wherever the road (or track) leads.
This is an island built for two wheels. The paved network linking Merichas, Chora, Dryopida and Loutra covers short distances, rarely more than 10–15 km between villages, but public transport is thin on the ground, so having your own **motorcycle rental in Kythnos** is the only way to see it on your own schedule. Traffic is light, lanes in the villages are narrow, and several of the best beaches sit at the end of dirt tracks that a nimble two-wheeler handles far better than a car.
For mopeds up to 50cc, you need at least an AM category licence; anything from 125cc up requires the matching motorcycle category, A1, A2 or A. A standard car licence isn't generally accepted as a substitute in Greece, so check your category before booking. Minimum age is 16 for AM/50cc mopeds and 18 for the motorcycle categories, though rental companies often set their own higher minimum and may ask for a minimum licence-holding period. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their licence. Expect a deposit, usually a credit-card hold, with the amount set by the individual operator.
Average rental price runs 20–25 EUR per day in low season and climbs to 35–45 EUR during high season, with premium models reaching 45–60 EUR per day.
High season runs July–August, when prices sit at their highest and the best bikes get snapped up early — book a few weeks ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches November through March, when many island rental shops close altogether. The sweet spot is May–June or September–October: milder weather, thinner crowds, and prices closer to the low end.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers alike, and enforcement is strict, with substantial fines for skipping one. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, though Kythnos's hilly, narrow lanes rarely invite going that fast. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l for most drivers, but a stricter 0.2 g/l applies to motorcyclists. Keep in mind that rental insurance almost always excludes dirt tracks and beaches, so treat routes like the one to Skylou Beach as scenic detours on foot once you park up, not as terrain to ride flat out.
