Kos rewards anyone willing to go beyond the harbour front. Rent a scooter and you can be sipping coffee below Kos Town Castle (Neratzia Castle) in the morning and watching the sun drop behind Zia Village by evening, with a swim at Tigaki Beach somewhere in between. The island is small enough to circle in a day yet varied enough that no two rides feel the same — flat coast roads give way to pine-covered hills, and villages that barely register on a bus timetable suddenly become easy detours.
At around 40 km end to end, Kos suits two wheels better than four. The coast is mostly flat and easy riding, while a single mountain ridge down the middle holds the scenery worth chasing. Traffic around Kos Town and the coast road is light to moderate, but many of the best spots — Zia, the beaches near Kefalos, the Thermes hot springs — sit at the end of narrow or winding lanes that a scooter handles far more easily than a hire car or a bus route ever could. A scooter rental in Kos also means you can stop wherever the view demands it, instead of sticking to a fixed schedule.
For mopeds up to 50cc, an AM category licence is enough, from age 16. Anything from 125cc up needs a matching motorcycle licence — A1, A2 or A — and a regular car licence will not cover you here. If you hold a non-EU licence, bring an International Driving Permit. Rental shops will also ask for a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount depending on the shop and the bike.
Expect to pay 30–45 EUR a day for a scooter in high season, with larger 250cc+ motorcycles running 40–70 EUR and premium or big-displacement bikes reaching 60–100+ EUR. Prices drop considerably outside summer.
If you're travelling in July or August, book your scooter hire in Kos well ahead — availability tightens up fast in peak season. May, June and September strike the best balance of good weather, open rental shops and easier prices. Winter travellers will find the cheapest rates, but should confirm in advance that a shop is actually open, since many close for the season.
Greece drives on the right, and helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger — police enforcement is strict and fines are steep. Speed limits are 50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h on open roads and up to 110–130 km/h on faster routes, though smaller-engine bikes are effectively slower than that anyway. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but only 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists, so it's best to treat any riding day as an alcohol-free one. Keep to paved roads, since insurance almost never covers dirt tracks or beaches, and always carry your licence, IDP and rental papers with you.

When you make an online motorbike reservation you can also order the following extra services and equipment: integral helmet, GPS navigation, intercom, unlimited mileage, top case, side cases, boots, jacket, gloves, individual guide or tour, map, full insurance, one-way rental, or delivery to your chosen address.
