Kavala doesn't announce itself the way Athens or Santorini do — it reveals itself in layers, from the harbor below Kavala Castle to the Roman stones of Ancient Philippi inland. Climb the old town on two wheels and you'll be at the Byzantine fortress in minutes, looking down over the Panagia peninsula and the bay beyond. Ride the coast road west and Nea Peramos appears with its own small castle and sea views the whole way. This is a city built for a scooter, not a tour bus.
The old town's lanes are narrow and steep, exactly the kind of streets where a car becomes a liability and a scooter becomes an advantage — you can park almost anywhere and thread through without a second thought. What makes Kavala worth renting a bike for, though, is what sits just outside it: Philippi is a short ride inland, the coast toward Keramoti and Nea Peramos unfolds in an easy loop, and the foothills of Mount Pangaion climb away from the shoreline for anyone who wants higher ground. Nothing here is more than half an hour away, which is exactly the range where a nimble bike beats a car.
For a 50cc moped, category AM is enough, with a minimum age of 16. Anything from 125cc up needs the matching motorcycle licence — A1, A2 or A — and rental shops in Greece are required to check it against the bike. A car licence is not accepted as a substitute here. If your licence isn't from the EU, bring an International Driving Permit. Expect a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount set by the individual operator.
A standard scooter or 125cc bike runs about 20-25 EUR per day in low season, and climbs to roughly 35-50 EUR per day in July and August as demand peaks. Larger or premium touring bikes go from around 50-80 EUR per day and up, especially at the height of summer.
July and August are Kavala's high season — the best weather for riding the coast, but also the highest prices and the most competition for bikes, so book ahead. November through March is low season, with shops offering their cheapest rates, though some island and coastal operators scale back or close over winter. May-June and September-October split the difference nicely: milder heat, thinner crowds, and prices closer to the low-season end.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers on every scooter, moped and motorcycle, and police enforcement is strict. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road outside town, dropping further for smaller-engine bikes. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but only 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists, so it's effectively zero-tolerance on two wheels. Keep your licence, IDP, rental agreement and insurance papers with you whenever you ride, and stay on paved roads — rental insurance almost never covers dirt tracks or beaches.
