Kalamata is one of those places where the old town moves at walking pace, but everything worth seeing sits just far enough away to make a motorcycle the obvious choice. Head north through the olive groves and you reach Ancient Messene in about 35 minutes; head south and the coast road unwinds toward Kardamyli and the Mani, mountains on one side and the Messinian Gulf on the other. A motorcycle turns those distances into part of the trip, not an obstacle to it.

The city itself is compact enough to cover on foot, but the region around it is built for two wheels. The Mani coast road twists along the base of Taygetos with sea views the whole way, the mountain passes toward Artemisia reward you with proper hairpins, and stretches like the Pylos–Methoni loop are long enough that a car starts to feel like a cage. If you want to rent a motorcycle in Kalamata, this is exactly the kind of geography that makes it worthwhile.

Top 10 things to see in Kalamata by motorcycle

  1. Ancient Messene (Archaia Messini) — one of the best-preserved ancient cities in Greece, reached by a scenic ride through olive groves north of town.
  2. Kalamata Castle (Kastro tis Kalamatas) — a Byzantine-Frankish fortress above the old town with sunset views over the gulf.
  3. Voidokilia Beach — the iconic horseshoe-shaped bay near Pylos, a classic coastal day trip.
  4. Kardamyli — the gateway village to the Mani, with a coast road that hugs Taygetos and the sea.
  5. The Mani Road, from Kalamata to Areopoli via Kardamyli and Stoupa — the signature riding route in the region, winding tarmac beneath the mountains.
  6. Diros Caves (Spilaia Dirou) — underground lake caves near Areopoli, a favourite stop on a deep-Mani ride.
  7. Stoupa Beach — a laid-back sandy bay along the Mani coast road, perfect for a swim break.
  8. The Taygetos mountain road toward Artemisia and Sparta — a twisting pass for riders who want elevation and hairpins.
  9. Pylos and Navarino Bay — a historic harbour town with the Venetian fortress of Niokastro, reachable on a longer loop.
  10. Methoni Castle — a massive seafront Venetian fortress often paired with Pylos on a full-day ride.

What do you need to rent a motorcycle in Kalamata?

You need a motorcycle licence matched to the bike's engine size — A1, A2 or A depending on the model, and rental shops are required to check that your category matches. The minimum age is generally 18, though many operators set it higher and may ask for a minimum time holding your licence. If your licence isn't from the EU, bring an International Driving Permit (IDP). A deposit is standard, usually held on a credit card, with the amount varying by operator and by bike.

How much does it cost to rent a motorcycle in Kalamata?

Expect roughly 25-40 EUR per day in low season, rising to 50-90 EUR per day in July and August for a mid-size bike. Larger touring or adventure models, in the 700-950cc class, run 70-130 EUR per day at peak times.

  • Prices climb steadily from spring, peak in July-August, and ease off again through autumn.
  • Booking a few days ahead in high season helps, since the more popular bikes sell out first.

When to book a rental motorcycle in Kalamata?

High season runs July to August, when prices are at their highest and the best bikes go quickly. Low season stretches from November to March, with the cheapest rates but also the coolest, wettest weather. If you want the sweet spot, aim for May-June or September-October: quieter roads, milder heat, and prices well below the summer peak.

Local traffic rules in Kalamata

Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and the police do enforce this, with real fines for skipping it. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l for most drivers, but motorcyclists and riders in their first two years of licence face a stricter 0.2 g/l. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on the open road, and up to 110-130 km/h on faster roads, with lower limits for smaller-engine bikes. Keep to paved roads — insurance on rental bikes almost always excludes dirt tracks and off-road riding — and carry your licence, IDP and rental papers with you at all times.
