Ikaria doesn't do things the ordinary way, and getting around the island is no exception. Rent a motorcycle in Ikaria and you can chase the coast road out to Nas Beach, where the Chalaris river meets the sea beside the ruins of an ancient Temple of Artemis, then climb into the hills after dark to Christos Raches, the famous village that only wakes up once the sun goes down. Between those two extremes lies most of what makes this island worth exploring — thermal springs, monasteries, and coves that never see a tour bus.
There's a reason locals ride rather than drive here. Ikaria's villages and beaches string along a rugged, winding network of coastal and mountain roads, and public transport between them is patchy at best. Outside the port of Agios Kirykos, traffic thins to almost nothing, but the roads themselves stay narrow, twisty and slow, which suits a nimble scooter or small motorcycle far better than a car. A **scooter rental in Ikaria** gives you the freedom to stop wherever a view or a beach catches your eye, instead of working around a bus timetable that barely exists.
For a moped up to 50cc you'll need at least a category AM licence; anything from 125cc up requires the matching motorcycle category, A1, A2 or A — a car licence alone isn't accepted. Minimum age is generally 16 for a 50cc moped and 18 for the larger categories, though most rental companies set their own higher minimum and may ask for a minimum time holding your licence. Non-EU visitors should bring an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence, and expect to leave a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the exact amount set by the operator.
A basic 50-125cc scooter runs roughly 15-25 EUR per day in low season, rising to 25-40 EUR in high season. Larger motorcycles from 250cc and up cost more, up to 50-70 EUR per day at peak times, with a premium of roughly 10-30 EUR per day over a standard scooter.
High season runs July through August, when prices peak and the best bikes go quickly, so book ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, with the lowest prices but a real chance that some rental shops are simply closed for the winter. May, June, September and October are a sweet spot — mild weather, thinner crowds, and better rates than midsummer.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and enforcement is strict with substantial fines for skipping one. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, though Ikaria's mountain bends rarely let you get near that. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but a stricter 0.2 g/l applies to motorcyclists, so it's best to treat riding and drinking as mutually exclusive. Keep in mind that rental insurance almost always excludes unpaved roads and dirt tracks, so leaving the tarmac can void your cover entirely.
