Amorgos rewards anyone willing to leave the harbor behind. Ride out from Katapola along the winding spine road toward Chora, and within minutes you're above the coast with the Aegean spread out below. Push on to Panagia Hozoviotissa Monastery, its white walls pressed flat against a cliff face, and you'll understand why this island's landscape was made for two wheels rather than a bus timetable.
Amorgos is long, narrow and mountainous, with a single main road threading Katapola, Chora and Aegiali together, and steep side roads peeling off toward villages and coves that buses simply don't reach. A motorcycle rental in Amorgos lets you follow your own pace on these switchbacks, stopping wherever a view or a beach catches your eye, without wrestling a car down lanes built for donkeys.
For scooters up to 50cc you need at least an AM category licence, while anything 125cc and above requires a matching motorcycle licence (A1, A2 or A) — a standard car licence isn't accepted as a substitute in Greece. The minimum age is generally 16 for AM mopeds and 18 for the motorcycle categories, though rental companies often set their own, higher minimums. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their licence, and expect to leave a deposit, usually held on a credit card, when you pick up the bike.
Average rental prices run from 20–25 EUR per day in low season up to 30–40 EUR during high season, with premium models reaching 40–55 EUR per day.
High season runs July through August, when demand and prices both peak, so book a few weeks ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, though realistically the cheaper, quieter riding windows are April, May and October, when the island is still open for business but far less crowded. If you want the best mix of good weather and easy availability, aim for late spring or early autumn.
Greece drives on the right, and helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger — enforcement is strict and fines aren't small. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, though Amorgos' narrow, winding routes rarely let you approach those limits anyway. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l for most drivers, but a stricter 0.2 g/l applies to motorcyclists, so it's best to treat riding and drinking as mutually exclusive. Keep your licence, IDP, rental agreement and insurance papers with you at all times, and stick to paved roads — insurance typically excludes dirt tracks, beaches and off-road riding entirely.
