Agrinio doesn't look like much from the highway, but give it an afternoon on two wheels and it opens up fast. Head east and you're riding the shoreline of Lake Trichonida, Greece's largest natural lake, with fishing villages sliding past on one side and water on the other. Push on to Angelokastro and you'll find a medieval Byzantine kastro perched above the lake, the kind of view that makes the climb worth it. South of town the road flattens out toward the Messolonghi lagoon, where wooden fishing huts stand on stilts and flamingos work the shallows — a completely different landscape twenty minutes from where you started.
That's really the case for a motorcycle rental in Agrinio: this is a region built around lakes, mountains and a nearby coastline, stitched together by open rural roads with almost no in-town traffic to fight through. A car keeps you sealed off from all of it. On a bike you can pull over at a lakeside taverna, cut through the Panaitoliko foothills on a whim, or ride the causeway out to Tourlida for sunset — nothing here is more than an hour away, and most of it is closer.
The licence you need depends on the bike. Mopeds up to 50cc call for at least an AM category licence, while anything 125cc and above needs a matching motorcycle category — A1, A2 or A. A car licence on its own generally won't cover you here. Minimum age is 16 for a 50cc moped and 18 for the larger categories, though many rental shops set their own higher minimum. If you're coming from outside the EU, bring an International Driving Permit along with your home licence. A deposit is standard practice too, usually held on a credit card, with the amount set by the individual operator.
Expect to pay around 25–30 EUR per day in low season, rising to 35–45 EUR in high season, with larger premium models running 50–70 EUR per day.
July and August are the busiest and priciest months, so if your trip lands in high season, book ahead rather than hoping for a walk-up bike. November to March is low season, with the cheapest daily rates but a smaller and less predictable fleet on offer. For the best balance of comfortable temperatures and lighter demand, aim for May–June or September–October.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any moped, scooter or motorcycle, and police do enforce this with real fines. Speed limits run 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on open country roads, and up to 130 km/h on motorways, though smaller-engine bikes may be capped lower. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l for most drivers, but motorcyclists face a stricter 0.2 g/l — effectively, don't drink and ride. Keep your licence, IDP and rental papers on you whenever you're out, and remember that straying onto dirt tracks or unpaved shortcuts will usually void your insurance, so stick to the tarmac.
