Euboea rewards anyone willing to cover ground, and there's no better way to do it than on two wheels. Point a scooter north from Chalkida and within a couple of hours you're soaking in the seafront hot springs of Edipsos, or you can head for the hills instead, climbing toward Dirfys where the air cools and the views stretch across the whole gulf. The island rarely feels crowded once you're past the capital, and that's exactly the point.
Distances here are made for a bike, not a car. The coastal road past Rovies and Limni winds through olive groves at a pace that lets you actually notice them, and the mountain routes up to Steni Dirfyos have enough hairpins that a scooter's agility beats any four-wheeled alternative. Traffic outside Chalkida is light, parking is never an issue, and pulling over for a photo of the gulf costs you nothing.
For scooters up to 50cc, category AM covers you from age 16. Anything from 125cc up requires the matching motorcycle licence — A1, A2 or A — and a standard car licence won't be accepted as a substitute. Non-EU visitors should bring an International Driving Permit. Rental companies will hold a deposit, usually a credit-card authorisation, and many set their own minimum age above the legal floor, so it's worth checking before you book.
Expect around 20–25 EUR per day for a basic scooter in low season, rising to 35–50 EUR per day in high season or for a larger 125–300cc bike. Where bigger touring motorcycles (300cc+) are available, count on 50–70 EUR per day and up.
July and August are Euboea's high season — hot, busy, and the most expensive months to rent. November to March is low season, cheap but with limited availability as shops wind down for winter. May, June, September and October hit a comfortable middle ground: mild weather, fewer crowds, and prices that sit between the two extremes.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger alike, and police enforcement is strict. Speed limits run 50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h on open roads and up to 110–130 km/h on faster roads, though smaller-engine bikes have lower caps. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, tightened to 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists. Keep your licence, IDP, rental agreement and insurance papers with you whenever you ride, and stick to paved roads — insurance almost never covers dirt tracks or beach access.
