Anafi rewards the traveller who's willing to leave the port behind. Rent a motorcycle here and you can be sipping coffee in Chora within minutes, then climbing the coast road toward Roukounas Beach by lunchtime — routes a bus schedule (there isn't one) would never let you piece together in a single day.
This is a small, quiet island with barely any traffic and only a short web of paved and dirt roads linking the port, Chora and the south-coast beaches — so a scooter isn't a luxury here, it's close to the only way around. The terrain is hilly rather than harsh, which makes it forgiving even for riders who don't do this often, and it's the only way to reach the rough track up to Kalamos and its monastery, somewhere no taxi will take you.
For anything above a 50cc moped you'll need a motorcycle licence matching the bike's engine size — A1, A2 or A — and rental shops in Greece are required to check it. For 50cc mopeds, category AM and a minimum age of 16 will do, though most operators set the bar at 18 anyway. Non-EU visitors should bring an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Expect a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount set by the individual rental company.
Average rental prices run from EUR 20–25 per day in low season up to EUR 30–40 per day in high season, with premium models reaching EUR 40–55 per day.
July and August are Anafi's high season — hot, busy and the most expensive months to rent, with bikes selling out if you wait too long. Book ahead if you're travelling then. April, May and October sit in the low season, with better prices and a more relaxed island to ride around, though some shops scale back or close outside the warmer months, so it's worth confirming availability before you arrive.
Greece drives on the right, and helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger — enforcement is strict and fines aren't small. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, though Anafi's narrow, hilly lanes rarely let you get near that anyway. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but tightens to 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists, so it's best to treat it as effectively zero. Keep in mind that rental insurance almost never covers dirt tracks or off-road riding, which matters if you're heading up toward Kalamos — stick to what's covered and check with your rental company beforehand.
