Picture the road climbing away from Kalloni's salt flats, cutting through olive groves toward the sea walls of Molyvos, then dropping again to a quiet cove where nobody but a fisherman is watching the sunset. That's an ordinary afternoon when you rent a motorcycle in Agia Paraskevi. From this village near Kalloni you're within easy reach of Petra's cliffside chapel, the monastery at Limonos, and the long sandy sweep of Vatera — all without waiting on a bus timetable that may not exist.

Lesvos is big by island standards, and its best places rarely sit close together. Villages, monasteries and beaches are scattered 20 to 60 km apart, public transport thins out fast once you leave the main towns, and a car feels oversized on the narrow lanes threading through places like Agiasos or Molyvos. A motorcycle sidesteps both problems: it slips into tight village parking, handles the winding mountain and coastal roads with ease, and turns the ride itself — wind, pine smell, sea views — into part of the trip rather than dead time between stops.

Top 10 things to see in Agia Paraskevi by motorcycle

  1. Molyvos (Mithymna) Castle & village — a Byzantine-Genoese hilltop fortress with views across the Aegean toward the Turkish coast, and the classic ride destination from central Lesvos.
  2. Petra & the Panagia Glykofilousa church — a seaside village where the chapel sits perched on a rock outcrop, with a lively beachfront strip for a coffee break.
  3. Limonos Monastery — one of the island's most important monasteries, just outside Kalloni and close to Agia Paraskevi, with a small ecclesiastical museum worth a stop.
  4. Skala Kallonis & the Gulf of Kalloni salt flats — a flat coastal road, flamingos in season, and fresh sardines at the harbour tavernas.
  5. Sigri and the Petrified Forest of Lesvos — a longer, dramatic ride west across volcanic terrain to fossilised tree trunks and an end-of-the-road fishing village.
  6. Ipsilou Monastery — an isolated monastery crowning a volcanic peak on the way to Sigri, with sweeping views over the island's west end.
  7. Eresos & Skala Eresou beach — a long sandy beach, legendary as Sappho's birthplace, backed by a relaxed strip of bars and tavernas.
  8. Agiasos village — a traditional mountain settlement on the slopes of Mount Olympus (Lesvos), with cobblestone lanes, pottery workshops and cooler mountain air.
  9. Mytilene town and its Kastro — the island capital, with a hilltop castle, a harbour promenade and an archaeological museum, a natural loop-back point.
  10. Vatera beach — one of the island's longest and most popular sandy beaches, a favourite scenic run from the Kalloni/Agia Paraskevi area.

What do you need to rent a motorcycle in Agia Paraskevi?

For mopeds up to 50cc you'll need at least an AM category licence; anything 125cc or larger requires the matching motorcycle category (A1, A2 or A) — a car licence is not accepted as a substitute in Greece. Minimum age is generally 16 for 50cc mopeds and 18 for the larger categories, though most rental companies set their own, often higher, minimums and may ask for a minimum time you've held the licence. If your licence isn't from the EU, bring an International Driving Permit (IDP). Expect to leave a deposit, usually as a credit-card hold, with the amount depending on the vehicle and operator.

How much does it cost to rent a motorcycle in Agia Paraskevi?

A standard scooter or small motorcycle runs around 20–25 EUR per day in low season, climbing to 30–45 EUR per day in high season; larger-cc motorcycles or premium models can reach 45–70 EUR or more per day at the peak.

  • Prices are lowest from November to March, when many island rental shops scale back or close.
  • April to June and September to October sit in a comfortable mid-range shoulder.
  • July and August are the priciest months, with bikes selling out fast.

When to book a rental motorcycle in Agia Paraskevi?

High season runs July through August, when demand and prices both peak and scooters can sell out days ahead — book early if you're travelling then. Low season, November to March, brings the cheapest rates but also closed shops on much of the island. For the best balance of good weather, open roads and fair prices, aim for May–June or September–October.

Local traffic rules in Agia Paraskevi

Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and police enforce this strictly with real fines. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, lower for smaller-engine bikes. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but a stricter 0.2 g/l applies to motorcyclists and to drivers in their first two years on a licence. Keep your licence, IDP, rental agreement and insurance papers with you whenever you ride, and stick to paved roads — insurance almost never covers beaches, dirt tracks or off-road riding.
