Formentera rewards anyone willing to skip the bus timetable. Point a scooter down the coast road and within twenty minutes you can go from the turquoise shallows of Ses Illetes to the salt-white lanes around Sant Francesc Xavier, with the wind doing most of the work. Ride out to Far de la Mola for the cliffside views, or catch the sun dropping behind the pink rock of Cala Saona — the kind of afternoon that's hard to script around a bus.

The island is barely 20 km end to end, mostly flat, and its roads are narrow with limited parking — a scooter fits where a car simply can't. There's no train and the bus network runs on island time, so **renting a scooter in Formentera** is really the only way to string together several beaches and viewpoints in one day. Traffic stays light outside August, which makes even the winding stretch to Cap de Barbaria a relaxed, low-stress ride.

Top 10 things to see in Formentera by scooter

  1. Far de la Mola — a lighthouse at the island's eastern tip, with cliffside sea views along the Ruta de la Mola.
  2. Ses Illetes — the postcard-turquoise beach at the northern tip, inside the Parc Natural de ses Salines, with parking near La Savina.
  3. Platja de Migjorn — a long southern beach with several access points, ideal for stopping to swim along the coast road.
  4. Cala Saona — a sheltered cove with pink-tinted cliffs, a short ride from Sant Francesc and one of the island's best sunset spots.
  5. Estany des Peix and Estany Pudent — the salt lagoons of ses Salines, home to flamingos and flat, scenic riding along the main road north.
  6. Sant Francesc Xavier — the island's main town, with its fortified church and shops, a natural place to start or end a ride.
  7. Sant Ferran de ses Roques — a small village on the way to La Mola, known for the hippie-era Fonda Pepe bar.
  8. Mirador des Caló des Mort — a clifftop viewpoint over turquoise water, a popular photo stop on the road to La Mola.
  9. Cap de Barbaria — a stark, remote headland reached by a long, straight road, one of the island's most iconic rides.
  10. Es Caló de Sant Agustí — a tiny fishing hamlet with a rocky cove, roughly midway along the Migjorn coast road.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Formentera?

For a 50cc moped, an AM licence covers you (minimum age 15 in Spain), and a full car licence also works. For a 125cc scooter you'll need an A1 licence — the Spanish rule letting B-licence holders ride 125cc after three years only applies within Spain, so most non-EU visitors will need an actual motorcycle licence. Rental shops usually set their own minimum age, often 18 or 21, and will ask for a deposit blocked on a credit card in your name. If your licence isn't from the EU/EEA, bring an International Driving Permit along with your home licence — most rental desks will want to see it.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Formentera?

Expect around 15–20 EUR per day in low season and 30–45 EUR per day in high season, with larger or newer 125cc+ models running higher.

  • Prices climb steadily from spring, peaking in July and August.
  • November through March is the cheapest stretch, though some shops close for the depths of winter.
  • Booking ahead in summer helps, since the best scooters go quickly.

When to book a rental scooter in Formentera?

July and August are Formentera's high season, when beaches, roads and rental fleets are all at their busiest and prices sit at their peak. Low season runs November to March, with quieter roads and lower daily rates, though not every shop stays open through the coldest months. May, June, September and October hit a comfortable middle ground — mild weather, thinner crowds and reasonable prices, so booking a few weeks ahead is usually enough.

Local traffic rules in Formentera

Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers on mopeds and scooters at all times, and dipped headlights must stay on day and night. Speed limits top out at 90 km/h on conventional roads and drop to 50 km/h in town, while mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and can't use motorways. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightened to 0.3 g/l for riders with under two years' experience. Handheld phones and headphones are off-limits while riding, so keep the ride simple and enjoy the views instead.
