Formentera rewards the traveller who's willing to go off script, and nothing puts you closer to that than a quad. Picture bumping along the pine-shaded track up to Far de la Mola, the lighthouse that reportedly inspired Jules Verne, then dropping down to the salt flats of Ses Salines with flamingos wading in the shallows. A short ride later you're parked above Cala Saona, watching the sun sink behind red cliffs into turquoise water. This is what a **quad bike rental in Formentera** is for — reaching the moments the ferry-day crowds never see.
The island barely stretches 20 km end to end, but its charm lives on narrow lanes, sandy tracks and unpaved roads that a car simply can't handle, and where parking near the best beaches is scarce. A quad slips through all of it, letting you hop from a lighthouse road to a beach cove to a hilltop viewpoint in the time it'd take to find a parking spot in a rental car. It's exactly the kind of open-air, go-where-you-like touring that suits an island this size.
Road-legal quads in Spain require a driving licence, and rental companies on Formentera will normally ask to see a car licence rather than a specialist category. Most operators set their own minimum age, typically 18 or 21 depending on the model. If your licence isn't from the EU/EEA, bring an International Driving Permit along with your home licence, since rental desks commonly ask for it. Expect a deposit, usually blocked on a credit card in the renter's name, with the amount varying by vehicle and operator.
A basic quad runs from EUR 15 to EUR 25 per day in low season, rising to EUR 40–70 per day at the height of summer, with premium or larger-engine models reaching EUR 60–90 per day.
July and August are Formentera's busiest and priciest months, alongside Easter week, so book ahead if you're travelling then. From November through March the island quiets down, prices drop, and some rental shops shut for the season entirely. For the best balance of good weather, lighter crowds and fairer prices, aim for May, June, September or October.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every quad rider and passenger, on every road, at all times. Speed limits generally top out at 90 km/h on conventional roads and drop to 50 km/h in built-up areas, so there's no need to rush — Formentera rewards a slow pace anyway. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to 0.3 g/l for anyone who's held a licence less than two years. Ride within these limits and you'll have the freedom to explore the island exactly the way you pictured it.
