Formentera rewards anyone willing to leave the beach towel behind for an afternoon. The island is barely 19 km end to end, yet it packs in a lighthouse at each tip, a lagoon by the harbour and enough hidden coves to fill a week. Hop on a motorcycle and you can watch the sunrise at Far de la Mola and still make it to Cala Saona for sunset, with a swim at Platja de Ses Illetes somewhere in between.
There is no train here, buses are sparse, and parking near the best beaches fills up fast in summer — a scooter solves all three problems at once. Roads are narrow, flat to gently rolling, and rarely busy outside August, so you don't need a big engine to cover the island in a day. A modest 50cc-125cc scooter is the practical choice for getting from La Savina to the far ends of Formentera without wasting a morning on logistics.
For scooters up to 50cc, an AM licence is enough (a full category B car licence also covers these). For 125cc scooters, you'll need an A1 motorcycle licence — a car-based entitlement only works for Spanish or long-term EU residents, so most visiting tourists should hold an A1. Rental companies typically set their own minimum age, often 18 or 21 depending on the vehicle, and will ask for a deposit blocked on a credit card in your name. If your licence isn't from the EU/EEA, bring an International Driving Permit along with your home licence, since desks commonly ask for both.
A basic 50cc-125cc scooter runs around 25 EUR per day in the shoulder months, rising to roughly 35-50 EUR per day in peak summer. If you want something bigger, larger scooters, quads or motorcycles above 125cc typically cost 50-90 EUR per day.
July and August are Formentera's high season, when the island fills up and prices for a motorcycle rental in Formentera sit at their highest. Most operators run from around April/May through October, so the shoulder months of May, June, September and October give you lighter traffic, easier parking and the lower end of the price range. If you want to rent a motorcycle in Formentera for a summer trip, booking a little ahead is worth it, since availability tightens fast once August arrives.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any scooter or motorcycle, on every road, at all times. Speed limits top out at 90 km/h on conventional roads and drop to 50 km/h in built-up areas, with mopeds capped at 45 km/h and kept off motorways altogether — not that you'll need one on an island this size. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, reduced to 0.3 g/l for riders with less than two years of experience. Motorcycles and mopeds must run with dipped headlights day and night, and handheld phones or headphones are off-limits while riding.
