Picture the coast road out of Albir with the sea on one side and the Serra Gelada cliffs on the other, the throttle in your hand instead of a bus timetable. A rented motorcycle turns Albir from a pleasant seaside stop into a base camp: you can be walking the promenade at Racó de l'Albir one hour and winding up switchbacks toward Guadalest the next. This is the Costa Blanca at the pace it was meant to be seen — and renting a motorcycle in Albir is how you set that pace yourself.
Albir sits on a short, dense stretch of coastline where the best sights — Altea's old town, the rock at Calpe, the mountain village of Guadalest — are all a short ride away on narrow, twisting roads that get clogged and hard to park on in summer. A motorcycle slips through that traffic, parks in a fraction of the space a car needs in Altea's alleys, and handles the climbs to Bernia or Guadalest far more comfortably than a rental car ever will. What would eat a whole day by car becomes a relaxed afternoon loop on two wheels.
For a scooter up to 50cc, an AM licence covers you (a full category B car licence also works). For anything up to 125cc you'll need an A1 licence — a Spanish or EU category B licence only qualifies after three years and only within Spain, so most visitors from outside the EU will need an actual motorcycle licence. Bigger machines require A2 or A depending on power. Rental companies usually set their own minimum age, often 18 or 21, and will ask for a deposit blocked on your credit card. If your licence isn't from the EU/EEA, bring an International Driving Permit along with your home licence — most desks will ask for it.
A basic scooter (50–125cc) runs around 20–28 EUR per day in low season, with our own 25 EUR/day listing sitting right in that range. Larger motorcycles (500cc and up) or premium models can reach 50–90 EUR per day depending on season.
High season runs through July and August, when demand and prices both peak and it pays to book ahead. Low season stretches from November to March, with quieter roads and the lowest rates of the year. If you want the best of both — good weather without the summer crowds or prices — aim for May, June, September or October.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger on any moped or motorcycle, on every road, at all times, and dipped headlights must stay on day and night. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town, dropping to 30 km/h on single-lane urban roads, and 90 km/h on the open roads around Albir once you're outside built-up areas. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, cut to 0.3 g/l for riders with less than two years' experience. Handheld phones and headphones are off-limits while riding, so plan your route before you set off.
