Valencia rewards anyone willing to move fast between its beach and its old streets, and a motorcycle is how you do it properly. Ride the seafront to Playa de la Malvarrosa for lunch by the water, then swing past the sweeping curves of the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias before the light changes. String the two together in an afternoon and you'll cover more ground than most visitors manage in three days on foot.
The city was practically built for two wheels. It's flat, compact, and wrapped around the Jardín del Turia — the old riverbed turned into a long green park that runs the length of Valencia and doubles as the easiest north-south route through town. Parking a car in the historic centre is a headache; parking a scooter is not. And once you've looped the city, the same bike opens up longer rides along the coast and into the hills that public transport simply can't reach.
For anything up to 125 cc you'll need an A1 licence, or a Spanish/EU category B licence held for at least three years — though that B-based route only counts inside Spain, so most non-EU visitors will need an actual motorcycle licence. Larger machines call for an A2 or full A licence depending on power output. If your licence isn't from the EU/EEA, bring an International Driving Permit along with your home licence, since rental desks commonly ask for it. Most companies set their own minimum age, usually 18 or 21, and will block a deposit on your credit card before handing over the keys.
Expect around 25-30 EUR per day in low season and 40-55 EUR per day in high season, with premium models running 60-90 EUR per day.
High season runs through July and August, when the city is busiest and prices sit at their highest; book ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, with cheaper rates and less competition for bikes. If you want good weather without the crowds or the summer prices, May-June and September-October hit the sweet spot.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for riders and passengers on mopeds and motorcycles at all times, on every road. Speed limits top out at 120 km/h on motorways, drop to 90 km/h on conventional roads, and fall to 50 km/h in built-up areas — down to 30 km/h on single-lane urban streets. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightened to 0.3 g/l for riders with under two years' experience. Dipped headlights are required day and night, and handheld phones are off-limits while riding.
