Menorca rewards anyone willing to leave the car behind. Wind a scooter along the coast road toward Cala Macarella and Cala Macarelleta and you will trade a crowded car park for a short ride and a quiet trail down to two of the bluest coves in the Balearics. Further north, the wind off the water sharpens as you climb to the Cavalleria Lighthouse, where the cliffs drop straight into the Mediterranean and there is barely another soul in sight.
The island is only about 50 km end to end, but its charm lives in narrow, twisting lanes and village centres never built for traffic. Beach access points often have nothing more than a gravel verge to park on, and in high season that gap between cove and road becomes precious. A scooter or small motorcycle slips through all of it — tight turns, sun-baked villages, informal parking by the sand — while cars queue and circle. Outside peak summer weeks, roads are wonderfully calm, which only makes riding here more relaxing.
For a moped up to 50cc, an AM licence covers you (a full category B car licence also works). For a 125cc scooter, you need an A1 licence, or occasionally a B licence held at least three years — though that route only applies within Spain, so most non-EU visitors will need a proper motorcycle licence instead. Rental desks usually set their own minimum age, often 18 or 21 depending on the machine, and will block a deposit on a credit card in your name. If your licence was not issued in the EU, bring an International Driving Permit along with it, since it is commonly requested at pickup.
Expect around 25-35 EUR per day in low season, rising to 45-70 EUR per day in high season, with premium and larger-cc models running 70-100+ EUR per day.
July and August are peak season on the island, alongside Easter week, so book ahead if you are travelling then. Low season runs November through March, with the best riding weather generally in May-June and September-October — mild temperatures, lighter traffic and easier prices all at once.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers on any moped or motorcycle, at all times and on every road. Speed limits top out at 90 km/h on conventional roads and drop to 50 km/h in towns, with mopeds capped at 45 km/h and kept off motorways altogether. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightened to 0.3 g/l for riders with less than two years' experience. Headlights stay on day and night on two wheels, and handheld phones are off limits while riding.
