Cobblestones give way to open Galician road the moment you leave Santiago de Compostela behind, and that's really where a motorcycle earns its keep. Ride out past the pilgrim crowds and you can reach the wild granite coastline at Cabo Fisterra in about ninety minutes, or wind south to the river town of Padrón for lunch. This is a city built for walking in its old core and for riding everywhere else — and renting a bike here means you get both.
The historic centre around the cathedral is pedestrian and too tightly packed for any vehicle, so you'll always park up and explore it on foot. But Santiago's real appeal for riders lies outside the old town: the Rías Baixas coast, the Atlantic capes of Fisterra and Muxía, and dozens of granite-walled hamlets sit an hour or so away down winding rural roads that a car handles clumsily and a motorcycle handles brilliantly. If you want to see Galicia rather than just its capital, a bike is the way to do it.
For anything up to 125cc you'll need an A1 licence; larger machines call for an A2 or full A licence depending on power and age. If you hold a non-EU licence, bring an International Driving Permit along with it — most rental desks ask for one. Expect a minimum rental age of 18–21 depending on the bike, plus a deposit blocked on a credit card in your name.
Average rental prices run EUR 25–30 per day in low season and EUR 40–55 per day in high season, with premium models reaching EUR 60–90 per day.
Book a few weeks ahead if you're travelling in July or August, when demand from pilgrims and summer holidaymakers pushes prices toward the high-season range. Outside that window, especially November to February, you'll find easier availability and the lowest rates, while spring and early autumn offer the sweet spot of good riding weather and reasonable prices.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for riders and passengers at all times. Speed limits top out at 120 km/h on motorways, dropping to 90 km/h on regional roads and 50 km/h in town, with 30 km/h zones on single-lane urban streets. Motorcycles must run with headlights on day and night, and the blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l — lower, at 0.3 g/l, for riders with under two years' experience.
