Picture leaving the traffic and roundabouts of Ribarroja del Turia behind and pointing a motorcycle straight at the hills. Within forty-five minutes you can be crossing the hanging footbridges of Chulilla, suspended over the Turia gorge below an old Arab castle, or winding down toward the deep-blue waters of the Benagéber Reservoir. This is the kind of riding you came to Spain for — open roads, real views, and towns most tourists never reach.
Ribarroja sits right where Valencia's flat coastal sprawl gives way to inland mountains, which makes it an ideal base for two very different kinds of days. A rental bike gets you onto the narrow, near-empty backroads toward Chera and Buñol that a car simply can't enjoy in the same way, and just as easily carries you into Valencia city for an evening among its landmarks. Few bases give you both a proper mountain pass and a capital city in the same tank of fuel.
For a 125cc-class machine you'll need an A1 licence, or a car (category B) licence held for at least three years — though that B-based route only counts inside Spain, so most non-EU visitors should hold a proper motorcycle licence instead. Larger, unrestricted bikes call for a full A licence. Riders under 18 aren't eligible for anything above a moped. If your licence wasn't issued in the EU, bring an International Driving Permit along with it, since rental desks routinely ask for one. Expect to leave a deposit, usually blocked on a credit card in your name, with the exact amount set by the rental company and the class of bike.
A scooter or small 125cc-class motorcycle runs EUR 25-35 per day in low season, rising to EUR 40-60 per day in high season. Step up to a larger touring or sport motorcycle, 500cc and above, and daily rates through international rental chains climb to EUR 70-120 or more.
High season on mainland Spain runs through July and August, plus Easter week — book ahead if you're planning to ride then, since availability and prices both tighten up. Low season stretches from November to March, when you'll find the cheapest rates and a quieter road to yourself. If you can time it, May-June or September-October give you the best mix of good weather and manageable prices.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers on mopeds and motorcycles, on every road, at all times. Speed limits top out at 120 km/h on motorways, drop to 90 km/h on conventional roads, and fall to 50 km/h in town — down to 30 km/h on single-lane urban streets. Mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and can't use motorways. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightened to 0.3 g/l for riders with under two years' experience. Motorcycles and mopeds must run dipped headlights day and night, and handheld phones or headphones are off limits while riding.
