Picture the road curling above the Mediterranean, the Balcón de Europa catching the morning light behind you, and nothing between you and Frigiliana's white houses but a ribbon of asphalt through the hills. That's what a morning on two wheels in Nerja feels like. Rent a motorcycle in Nerja and you can chase the coast to Playa de Burriana for lunch, then turn inland toward the Axarquía without ever checking a bus timetable.
This stretch of the Costa del Sol was built for riding, not driving. The old town's lanes are narrow and its parking scarce and pricey, while the hill villages — Frigiliana, Competa — sit at the top of winding roads that reward a bike far more than a car. Distances between sights are short, ten to twenty-five minutes apart, so a scooter or motorcycle lets you cover more ground in a day than walking in the summer heat ever would, and with none of the parking headaches.
For scooters up to 50cc you need at least an AM licence (or a full category B). For 125cc scooters and motorcycles you'll need an A1 licence, since the Spanish rule letting long-held B licences cover 125cc only applies within Spain and doesn't help most visitors. Riders are usually expected to be 18 or older, and a deposit — normally blocked on your credit card — is standard practice. If your licence isn't from the EU, bring an International Driving Permit along with it, as rental desks commonly ask for one.
A basic 125cc scooter starts around 25 EUR per day in low season, rising to 35–45 EUR in high season. Larger motorcycles from 400cc and up, or premium scooters, run 60–90 EUR per day at peak times.
High season runs through July and August, plus Easter week, when demand and prices both climb — book ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, with the calmest, cheapest riding in May–June and September–October, when the weather is still warm but the roads are quieter.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any moped or motorcycle, at all times, and dipped headlights must stay on day and night. Speed limits are 90 km/h on conventional roads, dropping to 50 km/h in town and as low as 20–30 km/h on narrow urban streets, with mopeds capped at 45 km/h. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, lower for newer riders, and handheld phones or headphones aren't allowed while riding.
