Barcelona rewards riders who go looking for it, and nowhere more than in Sants-Montjuïc. Start the engine at the foot of the hill, take the switchbacks up to Montjuïc Castle for a harbor view that stops most people mid-sentence, then roll back down toward the Font Màgica just as the evening water-and-light show gets going. It's the kind of afternoon that's awkward on foot and pointless in a car — on two wheels it's twenty minutes.

This is a city built for a scooter, not a sedan. The one-way grid in the flatter districts eats up car journeys, parking near anything worth seeing is scarce and pricey, and the road up Montjuïc is really a series of tight bends that a bike handles far better than four wheels. Riders also get access to small free or cheap moto parking bays scattered around Sants-Montjuïc that cars simply can't use. And when you want to go further — south along the Garraf coast toward Sitges, say — the same bike that got you up the hill this morning is just as happy on the open road.

Top 10 things to see in Sants-Montjuïc by scooter

  1. Montjuïc Castle (Castell de Montjuïc) — the switchback road up is a ride in its own right, and the hilltop fortress delivers panoramic harbor views.
  2. Poble Espanyol — an open-air village of Spanish architecture, an easy add-on to the castle loop.
  3. Camp Nou — FC Barcelona's stadium, a quick hop north from Sants for any football fan.
  4. Palau Nacional and the Font Màgica — the Magic Fountain show below the National Palace steps is best seen at dusk.
  5. Mirador de l'Alcalde — a Montjuïc hillside viewpoint locals love for the skyline.
  6. Platja de la Barceloneta — the closest city beach, reached along the port in minutes.
  7. Bunkers del Carmel — the 360° lookout over Barcelona that everyone eventually finds their way to.
  8. Tibidabo — a twisty climb to the Temple del Sagrat Cor and the amusement park at the city's highest point.
  9. The Garraf coastal road toward Sitges — cliffs, beach towns and a proper day-trip route out of the city.
  10. Port Vell and Port Olímpic — a relaxed marina-front loop back into the centre.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Sants-Montjuïc?

For a 50cc moped, an AM licence covers you (a full category B car licence also works). For a 125cc scooter you'll need an A1 motorcycle licence — a Spanish B licence held three years technically qualifies locally, but that entitlement doesn't travel, so most visitors from outside the EU should plan on holding an A1. Rental desks generally set their own minimum age, often 18 or 21, and will ask for a deposit blocked on a credit card in your name. If your licence isn't from the EU/EEA, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it — most operators ask to see one.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Sants-Montjuïc?

Expect to pay 20-28 EUR per day in low season and 35-55 EUR per day in high season; a larger-displacement or premium model can run 45-70 EUR per day at peak times.

  • January and February are the cheapest months to book.
  • July and August are the most expensive, with June and September close behind.

When to book a rental scooter in Sants-Montjuïc?

High season runs July through August, when demand — and prices — peak. Low season stretches from November to March, when rates drop and the city is far quieter. If you'd rather skip both extremes, May-June and September-October give you good weather without the July crowds or their price tags.

Local traffic rules in Sants-Montjuïc

Spain drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for both rider and passenger on any moped or motorcycle, on every road, no exceptions. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in built-up areas, dropping to 30 km/h on single-lane urban streets, with mopeds capped at 45 km/h and kept off motorways. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightened to 0.3 g/l if you've held your licence less than two years. Dipped headlights stay on day and night, and handheld phones are off-limits while riding.
