Barcelona's old town gets all the postcards, but the view from Montjuïc Castle is the one worth earning. Swap the metro for a scooter rental in Sants-Montjuïc and the hill stops being an obstacle — it becomes the ride. Loop up past the Font Màgica as the light shows kick in, park a minute at Poble Espanyol, then keep climbing toward the harbor views most visitors never bother chasing.
This district was never built for walking. Montjuïc's roads switch back sharply up the hill, the distances between the castle, the gardens and Plaça d'Espanya are longer than they look on a map, and Sants' narrower streets aren't kind to cars. A scooter closes that gap: light enough to thread through town, strong enough to handle the climb, and quick to park wherever the view stops you.
For a 50cc moped you'll need an AM licence (minimum age 15 in Spain), or a full category B car licence, which also covers it. Step up to a 125cc scooter and you'll need an A1 licence — a Spanish B licence held three years only counts inside Spain, so most non-EU visitors will need a motorcycle licence instead. If your licence isn't from the EU/EEA, bring an International Driving Permit along with it, since rental desks commonly ask for one. Expect a credit-card deposit in your name; the exact amount and minimum age depend on the vehicle and the operator, often 18 or 21.
Prices move a lot across the year, so it pays to check the calendar before you book.
June through September is peak tourist season in Barcelona, and prices climb with the crowds — book ahead if you're arriving then. November to February is the quiet stretch, with the cheapest daily rates but cooler weather for the hill. May, June, September and October tend to strike the best balance of mild riding conditions and manageable prices.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for both rider and passenger on any moped or motorcycle, on every road, at all times. Speed limits drop fast in town: 50 km/h in built-up areas generally, down to 30 km/h on single-lane urban roads and 20 km/h where pavement and roadway share the same level — and mopeds are capped at 45 km/h regardless. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightened to 0.3 g/l if you've held your licence less than two years. Scooters and motorcycles must run with headlights on day and night, and handheld phones or headphones are off-limits while riding.
