Picture leaving your hotel in Salou and being at the gates of PortAventura World in ten minutes flat, then swapping the rollercoasters for a sunset cruise along Passeig Jaume I with the sea on one side and palm trees on the other. That's the kind of day a scooter buys you here. You can be sipping a coffee on Platja de Llevant in the morning and winding along the cliffs near the Cap de Salou lighthouse by afternoon, without ever checking a bus timetable.
Salou packs its best spots — the beaches, the old town, PortAventura — into a small area, but just far enough apart that walking gets old fast and parking a car in high season is its own kind of headache. A scooter closes those gaps in minutes, and it opens up short, scenic trips down the coast to Cambrils or up to Tarragona that would otherwise mean renting a car for the day. If you're weighing whether to rent a scooter in Salou, this is really why it makes sense.
For a 50cc moped you'll need an AM licence, or any full car licence covers it. For a 125cc scooter, EU visitors need an A1 licence, or a category B licence held for at least three years — note that entitlement only applies within Spain, so most non-EU travellers will need an actual motorcycle licence instead. If your licence wasn't issued in the EU or EEA, bring an International Driving Permit along with your home licence, since rental desks commonly ask for it. Most operators also set their own minimum age, often 18 or 21, and will block a deposit on your credit card.
Expect roughly 5–10 EUR per day in low season and 15–25 EUR per day in high season, with premium models running 25–35 EUR per day.
High season runs through July and August, when the town is at its liveliest and prices climb accordingly — book early if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, with the cheapest daily rates of the year. May, June, September and October sit comfortably in between: mild weather, thinner crowds, and easier availability without the summer premium.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for both rider and passenger on any moped or scooter, at all times. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in town, dropping to 30 km/h on single-lane urban roads, and mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and kept off motorways. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, lowered to 0.3 g/l for riders with under two years' experience. Headlights stay on day and night, and handheld phones or headphones are off-limits while riding.
Have a nice trip!
