Getafe won't slow you down. Hop on a scooter and the hilltop monument at Cerro de los Ángeles is minutes away, the little Eiffel Tower replica in Parque de Europa is a flat five-minute glide from the centre, and Madrid's Puerta del Sol is close enough for an easy afternoon out. You get all of that without waiting on buses or hunting for parking.
Getafe is exactly the kind of place a scooter was built for. It's compact enough that the cathedral, the parks and the local squares sit a few flat kilometres apart, yet it borders Madrid closely enough that the city centre, Madrid Río and even Aranjuez are within easy reach for a day trip. No car, no city-centre parking headaches — just point the scooter where you want to go.
For a 50cc moped you need an AM licence (minimum age 15 in Spain), while a full category B car licence also covers it. For a 125cc scooter you'll need an A1 licence — a Spanish B licence held for three years only counts inside Spain, so most visiting non-EU travellers will need a proper motorcycle licence instead. Rental companies usually set their own minimum age, often 18 or 21, and will ask for a deposit blocked on a credit card in your name. If your licence isn't from the EU, bring an International Driving Permit along with your home licence — most desks will want to see it.
Prices move with the seasons. A basic scooter starts around 5 EUR per day in low season, while high-season demand pushes rates to roughly 12-20 EUR per day. Higher-spec or electric models can run 20-30 EUR per day.
If you're after the lowest prices, aim for the low season between November and March, when rates sit near their floor. High season kicks in through July and August (plus Easter week), so booking ahead is worth it if your trip lands then. May-June and September-October offer some of the most pleasant riding weather without the peak summer premium.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any scooter or motorcycle, on every road, at all times. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in built-up areas, dropping to 30 km/h on single-lane urban roads, while mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and can't use motorways. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightened to 0.3 g/l for riders with under two years' experience. Scooters and motorcycles must run with dipped headlights day and night, and handheld phones or headphones are off-limits while riding.
