Picture swapping the rental car queue for two wheels and an open road that climbs from black-sand coastline to cloud forest in under an hour. That's what a scooter rental in La Palma gets you: the freedom to stop at the Mirador de El Time for a look over the Aridane Valley's banana plantations, then drop down to Tazacorte harbour for lunch by the water, all without waiting on a bus timetable.

La Palma isn't built for cars, not really. Its roads are narrow ribbons that switch back through village after village, and parking in places like Santa Cruz's old town or Puerto Naos can eat up half your afternoon. A scooter slips through where a car can't, and it climbs the island's steep gradients with none of the effort a bicycle would demand. It's still not the vehicle for the summit — the ride up to Roque de los Muchachos is cold, high, and long, better left to a car or a tour — but for hopping between coastal towns, beaches and the lower miradors, nothing beats it.

Top 10 things to see in La Palma by scooter

  1. Roque de los Muchachos — the island's highest viewpoint at 2,426m, with observatories and views over the Caldera de Taburiente, often above a sea of clouds.
  2. Mirador de El Time — a classic roadside stop over the Aridane Valley and the Caldera's Barranco de las Angustias.
  3. Ruta de los Volcanes area — the black volcanic landscape near Fuencaliente, close to the San Antonio and Teneguía volcanoes.
  4. Salinas de Fuencaliente — working salt pans on the southern tip, with a lighthouse and pools set against a lava-black coast.
  5. Playa de Puerto Naos — the island's main black-sand beach and promenade, a favourite for a sunset ride.
  6. Playa de Nogales — a wilder black-sand beach near Puntagorda at the end of a scenic descent.
  7. Charco Azul — natural volcanic-rock swimming pools on the northeast coast near San Andrés.
  8. Los Tilos laurel forest — a UNESCO-listed laurisilva forest in the north, with a waterfall trail and a green contrast to the south's volcanic terrain.
  9. Santa Cruz de la Palma old town — the historic capital, with colonial balconies and a harbourfront, a good base to start and end your rides.
  10. Tazacorte harbour — the island's lowest point, a fishing port and the start of the coastal road toward Puerto Naos.

What do you need to rent a scooter in La Palma?

For a 50cc moped you need an AM licence (minimum age 15 in Spain), or a full category B car licence, which also covers it. For a 125cc scooter you'll need an A1 licence, since the B-based entitlement to ride one only applies to Spanish and EU licence holders. Most rental companies set their own minimum age, often 18, and ask for a deposit blocked on a credit card. If your licence isn't from the EU, bring an International Driving Permit along with your home licence — desks commonly ask for it.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in La Palma?

Average rental prices run from 5 to 15 EUR per day in low season, rising to 15–30 EUR in high season, with premium models reaching 25–40 EUR per day.

  • Rates climb around July–August and again over Christmas and New Year.
  • The cheapest windows are November and January–February, once the holiday crowds have gone.

When to book a rental scooter in La Palma?

Unlike mainland Spain, the Canary Islands run on their own calendar — rentals operate year-round here, and it's the northern winter that brings the crowds. Book ahead for July, August and the Christmas to New Year stretch, when demand and prices both peak. If you'd rather ride when things are quieter and cheaper, aim for November or January–February outside the holidays.

Local traffic rules in La Palma

Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on mopeds and scooters, at all times and on all roads. Speed limits top out at 90 km/h on conventional roads and drop to 50 km/h in built-up areas, though mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and can't use motorways. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightened to 0.3 g/l if you've held your licence less than two years. Scooters and mopeds must run with dipped headlights at all times, day or night.
