Trade the bus timetable for open air and let the coast set your pace. Rent a scooter in Platja d'Aro and the whole stretch of the Costa Brava opens up — the cliffside walk at S'Agaró, the harbor at Sant Feliu de Guíxols, the walled lanes of Tossa de Mar — all reachable in the time it would take to find parking for a car. Twist the throttle in the morning and you could be swimming at Sant Pol by lunch and wandering a medieval old town by sunset.
This coast wasn't built for traffic jams. The road linking these towns is narrow, cliff-hugging and often clogged with rental cars in July, while parking in the old quarters is scarce at the best of times. A scooter slips through both problems: it threads the coastal bends, tucks into a gap outside a café, and turns what would be a half-hour crawl by car into a breezy fifteen-minute ride. The coves, ports and villages worth seeing sit 5 to 35 km apart — too far to walk, but exactly the range where two wheels beat four.
For a 50cc scooter you'll need an AM licence, or a full car licence covers it too — the minimum age locally is usually 15 to 18 depending on the shop. Step up to a 125cc model and you'll need an A1 motorcycle licence; a Spanish or EU car licence held for at least three years also qualifies, but that route generally doesn't apply if you're visiting from outside the EU. If your licence isn't from the EU or EEA, bring an International Driving Permit along with your home licence, since rental desks routinely ask for one. Expect a deposit blocked on your credit card, with the amount depending on the vehicle and operator.
A basic 50cc scooter runs roughly 5-12 EUR per day in the quieter months and climbs to 20-35 EUR per day in July and August. Want more power for the longer runs to Girona or Tossa? A 125cc or higher-spec model costs around 35-50+ EUR per day.
High season runs July and August, when the coast road fills up and prices sit at their highest — book ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November through March, with the lowest prices but reduced shop hours. For the best mix of good riding weather and manageable prices, aim for May-June or September-October.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any moped or motorcycle, at all times. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in built-up areas, dropping to 30 km/h on narrow single-lane urban streets, and mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and kept off motorways. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightened to 0.3 g/l if you've held your licence less than two years. Dipped headlights are required day and night, and handheld phones are off-limits while riding.

Usually basic third-party insurance is included in the rental price. If you wish to have more protection you can purchase additional CDW insurance, which limits your risk to the amount of your deposit. If you wish to rent a scooter without a deposit and with zero risk, you will need to add full insurance to your reservation.
When you make an online scooter reservation you can also order the following extra services and equipment: integral helmet, GPS navigation, intercom, unlimited mileage, top case, side cases, boots, jacket, gloves, individual guide or tour, map, full insurance, one-way rental, delivery to your hotel, delivery to your address, delivery to the arrival point of your choice.
