Picture swapping cramped rental-car queues for the open road along Dénia's marina, castle silhouette rising above the rooftops, sea breeze the whole way. That's the appeal of choosing two wheels here: you can duck up to the Castillo de Dénia for a panoramic look at the port one hour and be cooling off in a cove at Las Rotas the next. With a scooter you set the pace, stopping wherever the coast looks too good to pass up.

Dénia's old town was built for people, not cars — its lanes are narrow and parking near the port fills up fast, so a scooter gets you in and out with none of the hassle. The coast road toward Jávea and the winding routes skirting the Montgó massif suit a scooter's strengths perfectly: short hops between beaches, castle and marina, then a longer scenic cruise when you feel like it. Everything worth seeing sits within 5 to 15 km, so you'll spend more on ice cream than on fuel.

Top 10 things to see in Dénia by scooter

  1. Castillo de Dénia — hilltop castle above town with panoramic views over the port and the Mediterranean, a short, easy ride up from the marina.
  2. Las Rotas — rocky coastline east of town with clear-water coves, great for snorkeling and a scenic seafront ride.
  3. Las Marinas Beach — a long sandy promenade north of Dénia, flat and easy, with beach bars along the way.
  4. Montgó Natural Park — the limestone massif between Dénia and Jávea, its base roads winding and breezy.
  5. Dénia Port and Marina — departure point for ferries to the Balearics and a lively spot for a meal, the natural start of any loop.
  6. Jávea Old Town and Cap de la Nao — a popular run south along the coast ending at a dramatic lighthouse viewpoint.
  7. Cova Tallada — a sea cave near Cap de Sant Antoni reached by a short ride and a coastal trail.
  8. Cap de Sant Antoni — lighthouse and cliff viewpoint just south of Dénia with sweeping coastal views.
  9. Xàbia to Moraira coastal road — a scenic, winding drive linking several beach towns, ideal for a half-day loop.
  10. Baix la Mar fishermen's quarter — the colorful old district by the port, worth wandering before you head out along the coast.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Dénia?

For a 50cc moped, an AM licence covers you (minimum age 15 in Spain), and a full car licence works too. For a 125cc scooter you'll generally need a motorcycle licence, since the Spanish rule letting category-B holders ride 125cc after three years only applies within Spain and isn't something most non-EU visitors can rely on. If your licence isn't from the EU/EEA, bring an International Driving Permit along with it — rental desks routinely ask for one. Expect rental companies to set their own minimum age, often 18 or 21, and to take a deposit blocked on your card.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Dénia?

Basic scooters run roughly EUR 5–12 per day in low season and EUR 18–30 in high season, while premium models go for EUR 30–45 per day.

  • Prices climb steadily from spring, peaking in July and August.
  • November through March is the cheapest window to book.
  • Booking a couple of weeks ahead in summer helps you lock in the better rates.

When to book a rental scooter in Dénia?

High season runs through July and August, when the coast road to Jávea gets busy and prices sit at their yearly peak. Low season stretches from November to March, with quieter roads and the cheapest daily rates of the year. If you'd rather split the difference, May, June, September and October give you warm weather, thinner crowds and fairer prices — a sweet spot for exploring at your own pace.

Local traffic rules in Dénia

Spain drives on the right. Helmets are mandatory for both rider and passenger on any moped or motorcycle, on every road, at all times. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in town, dropping to 30 km/h on single-lane urban roads, while mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and can't use motorways. Headlights stay on day and night. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightening to 0.3 g/l if you've held your licence less than two years.

Book ahead for the busy summer weeks, or take advantage of the quieter, cheaper months if your dates are flexible. Have a nice trip!
