Picture swapping the crowded bus stop for the open road: a quick ride down to Playa de los Lances to watch the kites fill the sky, then further along the coast to Playa de Valdevaqueros, where the dunes roll right up to the water. That is what a couple of hours on two wheels buys you in Tarifa. You can rent a scooter in Tarifa on our website and set your own pace, stopping wherever the view or the wind is worth it.
Tarifa's old town is small and mostly closed to traffic, but everything memorable about this stretch of coast sits outside it, strung along miles of open road with barely a bus in sight. The N-340 stays quiet outside peak summer weekends, distances are short — even the trip out to Bolonia or up to Vejer takes under an hour — and parking a scooter at any beach or viewpoint takes seconds, unlike hunting for a spot with a car. A scooter rental in Tarifa is simply the practical way to link the coastline together in a single day.
For scooters up to 50cc, an AM licence covers you, and a full category B car licence works just as well. For 125cc scooters you'll need an A1 licence, since the local B-based entitlement only applies within Spain and most visitors from outside the EU can't rely on it. If your licence isn't from the EU or EEA, bring an International Driving Permit along with your home licence — rental desks commonly ask for it. Expect a deposit blocked on a credit card in your name, with the amount depending on the vehicle and the operator.
Prices move quite a bit across the year. In low season you're looking at roughly 5–12 EUR per day, high season runs about 20–35 EUR per day, and larger, premium models go for around 30–45 EUR per day.
High season on this stretch of coast means July and August, plus Easter week, when good scooters get booked up early and prices sit at their highest. Low season runs November through March, with quieter roads and the cheapest rates of the year. If you want the best of both — good weather, thinner crowds, fair prices — aim for May, June, September or October.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any moped or motorcycle, on every road, at all times. Speed limits top out at 90 km/h on the N-340 outside town and drop to 50 km/h in built-up areas, while mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and can't use motorways. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightened to 0.3 g/l if you've held your licence less than two years. Scooters and motorcycles must run with dipped headlights on day and night, so don't forget to switch yours on before you set off.
