Vigo doesn't spread out flat and easy like some coastal towns — it climbs. The old town tumbles down toward the harbour, and above it the hills keep going, up to the granite walls of Castro de Vigo, where the whole ría opens out beneath you. A scooter turns that climb into part of the fun instead of a reason to stay in bed: fifteen minutes from the port and you're looking down at the fishing fleet and the Cíes Islands on the horizon, without a drop of sweat to show for it.
That's really the case for a scooter here. Vigo is a port city squeezed onto a hillside above a ría, so the centre is dense, parking is a small miracle, and anywhere worth seeing — Casco Vello, the beach at Samil, the lookout at Monte da Guía — sits at a different altitude to the last place you were. A car gets stuck hunting for a space near the harbour; a bicycle turns those same hills into a workout. A **scooter rental in Vigo** slips through both problems: park almost anywhere, and let the engine do the climbing on the way to a viewpoint or a coastal day trip to Baiona.
For mopeds up to 50cc, an AM licence covers you (minimum age 15 in Spain), and any full car licence works too. For a 125cc scooter you'll need an A1 motorcycle licence — a Spanish car licence only qualifies after three years, and that route doesn't apply to most visitors from outside the EU. If your licence isn't from the EU or EEA, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it, since rental desks routinely ask to see one. Expect a deposit blocked on a credit card in your name, and most operators set their own minimum age, often 18 or 21 depending on the vehicle.
Prices in Vigo swing a fair bit across the year.
July and August are Vigo's busiest and priciest months, so book ahead if you're travelling then. November through February is the quiet, cheap end of the calendar, and May-June or September-October strike the best balance — mild weather, thinner crowds, and prices well below the summer peak. If you want to **rent a scooter in Vigo** without paying top rate, aim for one of those shoulder months.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers on mopeds and motorcycles, on every road, at all times. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in built-up areas, dropping to 30 km/h on single-lane urban roads, while mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and can't use motorways. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, lower still for newer riders. Headlights stay on day and night, and handheld phones or headphones are off-limits while riding.
