Pontevedra rewards anyone willing to wander past the tourist map, and a scooter is the easiest way to do it. Start in the old town, where cobbled lanes open onto Praza da Ferrería, then cross the medieval Ponte do Burgo and follow the Río Lérez out toward the coast. Within half an hour you can be walking barefoot on Praia da Lanzada or wandering the granary-lined waterfront of Combarro — distances that make a car feel like overkill and a bicycle like a workout.
The historic centre here is pedestrianised, so on foot you'll cover it fine. The real case for a scooter is everything around it: the Ría de Pontevedra is dotted with beaches, fishing villages and viewpoints that sit 15 to 30 minutes away by road, over hills that make cycling slow going and public transport a patchwork of infrequent buses. A scooter turns Pontevedra into a base for day-trip loops — Combarro, Sanxenxo, O Grove — that would otherwise mean renting a car for the day.
For a 50cc moped you'll need an AM licence (or any full car licence covers it); for a 125cc scooter you need an A1 motorcycle licence, since the B-licence route into 125cc only applies to Spanish and EU residents. Most rental shops set their own minimum age, usually 18 or 21, and will ask you to leave a deposit blocked on a credit card. If your licence isn't from the EU, bring an International Driving Permit along with your home licence — rental desks routinely ask for it.
Expect around 5-10 EUR per day in low season and 15-25 EUR per day in high season, with premium models running 25-35 EUR per day.
If you're chasing the best rates, aim for low season between November and March. High season runs through July and August, when demand along the Rías Baixas coast is highest and prices follow suit — booking a few weeks ahead is a good idea if your trip falls in that window. For a quieter mix of good weather and lower prices, May-June and September-October are hard to beat.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any moped or motorcycle, on every road, at all times. Speed limits top out at 90 km/h on conventional roads and drop to 50 km/h in town, or 30 km/h on narrow single-lane urban streets — and mopeds are capped at 45 km/h regardless. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightened to 0.3 g/l if you've held your licence less than two years. Headlights stay on day and night, and handheld phones are off-limits while riding.
