Castellón de la Plana rarely makes the headline of a Spanish coastal itinerary, and that is exactly what makes exploring it on two wheels so satisfying. Pick up a scooter and you can drift from the Concatedral de Santa María in the old town down to the sand at Playa del Pinar in ten unhurried minutes, then keep going along the coast road toward the fishing boats and waterfront cafés of El Grao. This is a city built for wandering rather than sightseeing by checklist, and a scooter lets you do exactly that.
The layout does most of the work for you. Castellón is flat, compact and strung out along the coast, so a scooter easily bridges the historic centre, the harbour and the beach without ever needing a car. Traffic is light, parking is painless, and the same ease extends beyond the city limits — a short ride north gets you to the Benicàssim seafront, while a rewarding, hillier detour climbs toward the Desierto de las Palmas, something you would not attempt comfortably on foot or bicycle in the Mediterranean heat.
For mopeds up to 50cc, an AM licence covers you, and a full car licence works too. For a 125cc scooter you'll need an A1 licence, since the B-licence entitlement for 125cc only applies within Spain and most visitors from outside the EU can't rely on it. If your licence isn't from the EU or EEA, bring an International Driving Permit along with your home licence, as rental desks commonly ask for it. Rental companies typically set their own minimum age, often 18 or 21 depending on the vehicle, and you should expect a deposit blocked on a credit card in your name.
Prices swing with the season. Expect around 5-12 EUR per day in low season and 15-25 EUR per day in high season, with premium models running 25-35 EUR per day.
High season runs through July and August, when demand and prices both peak. Low season stretches from November to March, with the calmer, cooler months of May-June and September-October often the sweet spot — pleasant riding weather without the summer premium. If you're set on a summer trip, booking early is worth it, as the best scooters and prices go first.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers on mopeds and motorcycles, on every road, at all times. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in built-up areas, dropping to 30 km/h on single-lane urban roads, while mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and can't use motorways. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightened to 0.3 g/l for riders with under two years of experience. Dipped headlights are required day and night, and handheld phones or headphones are off-limits while riding.
