Picture yourself parking right by the Far Vermell, the little red lighthouse marking the mouth of the harbour, with the whole of Cambrils' seafront open ahead of you. That's the appeal of a scooter here: you glide down the Passeig Marítim at your own pace, stop wherever the light looks good, and skip straight past the crowds queueing for the tourist train. One afternoon you might be having lunch at the fishing port, watching the daily catch come in at the Llotja auction; the next you're fifteen minutes down the coast in Salou, or further out at the ruins of a Roman villa near Altafulla. A scooter turns Cambrils from a single resort into a whole stretch of coastline you can actually reach.
Cambrils itself is built for two wheels rather than four. The old town and seafront are compact and flat, traffic moves slowly along the coast road, and parking a car near the beach in high season is its own headache. A scooter slips into any gap, gets you from the harbour to the beaches in minutes, and covers the twenty-odd kilometres to Tarragona or the run down to Mont-roig del Camp without you waiting on a bus timetable. It's an easy, low-stress way to get around even if you've never ridden one before.
For a 50cc moped you need an AM licence, or any full car (category B) licence covers it too — the minimum age is 15. For a 125cc scooter you'll need an A1 licence; a Spanish or EU B licence held for at least three years only counts within Spain, so most non-EU visitors should bring a motorcycle licence instead. If your licence isn't from the EU or EEA, carry an International Driving Permit alongside it, as rental desks commonly ask for one. Rental shops usually set their own minimum age, often 18 or 21, and will block a deposit on a credit card in your name.
Prices swing a lot between seasons. In low season you can find a scooter from around 5 to 10 EUR per day, while in high season expect 20 to 35 EUR per day. A bigger, premium model typically runs 35 to 50 EUR per day.
July and August are Cambrils' high season, when demand and prices both peak, so book ahead if you're travelling then. From November through March things quiet down and prices drop close to their lowest. If you want good weather without the summer crush, May, June, September and October hit a comfortable middle ground for both riding conditions and price.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers on mopeds and scooters, on every road, at all times. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, dropping to 30 km/h on single-lane urban roads, while mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and can't use motorways. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, lowered to 0.3 g/l for riders with less than two years' experience. Scooters and mopeds must run with dipped headlights on, day and night, and handheld phones or headphones aren't allowed while riding.
