There is a particular pleasure in leaving the car behind in L'Alfàs del Pi. Wind up through Finestrat towards the notched summit of Puig Campana, or drop down to the whitewashed lanes and blue-domed church of Altea's old town, and you start to feel less like a visitor and more like someone who actually lives on this stretch of the Costa Blanca. A short ride to the Albir lighthouse for sunset, or further out to the cliffside village of Guadalest, and the whole coast opens up in a way a coach tour never could.
This is a landscape built for two wheels. Alfaz del Pi sits pinned between the sea and the Sierra de Aitana, and the best sights here are split between winding mountain roads and short coastal hops — often only 10 to 30 km apart. A scooter or motorcycle lets you string several of them into a single day without hunting for parking in Altea's narrow old quarter or crawling through Benidorm's summer traffic. If you're weighing up a scooter rental in L'Alfàs del Pi against a hire car, the bike wins on flexibility alone.
For a moped up to 50cc, an AM licence covers you (a full category B car licence also works). A 125cc scooter needs an A1 licence — the Spanish rule letting long-held B licences cover 125cc only applies within Spain, so most non-EU visitors will need a proper motorcycle licence instead. Larger motorcycles step up through A2 and A categories by age and experience. If your licence isn't from the EU/EEA, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it, since rental desks routinely ask for one. Expect a minimum age around 18–21 depending on the vehicle, and a deposit blocked on a credit card in your name.
Average rental prices run from EUR 25-30 per day for a scooter or small motorcycle in low season, up to EUR 40-60 per day in high season. Larger touring or sport motorcycles, 500cc and above, can reach EUR 60-90+ per day at peak times.
High season on the Spanish mainland runs through July and August, plus Easter week — book ahead if you're travelling then, as good bikes go fast. Low season stretches from November to March, with the calmest roads and lowest prices. If you can, aim for May–June or September–October: quieter traffic, mild weather, and rates closer to the low-season end.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers on mopeds and motorcycles at all times, and dipped headlights must stay on day and night. Speed limits are 120 km/h on motorways, 90 km/h on conventional roads, and 50 km/h in town, dropping to 30 or even 20 km/h on narrow single-lane urban streets — mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and can't use motorways at all. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightened to 0.3 g/l for riders with under two years' experience, and handheld phones or headphones are off-limits while riding.
