Menorca rewards anyone willing to leave the car behind. The island is small enough — barely 50km tip to tip — that a morning's pedaling can take you from the harbour lanes of Ciutadella out to the pine-fringed sand of Cala Turqueta, or up the coast to the black-and-white lighthouse at Far de Favàritx, standing alone on its slate moonscape. You can rent a bike in Menorca on our website and set your own pace, stopping wherever the water looks too good to pass up.
This is flatter, gentler terrain than neighbouring Mallorca, and most of what makes Menorca special sits down lanes a car simply can't reach. The coves along the south coast, the old drovers' track known as the Camí de Cavalls, the birdwatching paths inside Albufera des Grau — all of it opens up once you're on two wheels, without the parking scrums that clog the island every July and August. A bike rental in Menorca also sidesteps the narrow village streets that make driving a headache in Ciutadella's old town.
Nothing complicated: cycling in Spain requires no licence at any age, so anyone can walk in and ride off. Rental companies usually ask for ID and sometimes a card deposit, though this varies by operator and is generally modest for a standard bike. No International Driving Permit is needed — that's only relevant if you're also renting a scooter or car.
A standard city or hybrid bike runs around 3–6 EUR per day in low season and 10–15 EUR per day in high season. E-bikes and mountain bikes sit higher, typically 15–25 EUR per day depending on the season.
July and August are Menorca's high season, when beaches, roads and bike shops fill up fast — book ahead if you're travelling then. From November to March things go quiet, with the lowest prices but also shorter days and cooler weather. May, June, September and October hit the sweet spot: warm enough to swim, quiet enough to ride the coves in peace, and priced well below the summer peak.
Spain drives on the right. Cyclists must wear a helmet on interurban roads regardless of age, though within towns it's only compulsory for riders under 16 — we'd still recommend wearing one everywhere. Speed limits on the island's roads generally sit at 90 km/h outside built-up areas and drop to 50 km/h, or as low as 20–30 km/h, in town centres. Drivers overtaking cyclists must leave at least 1.5m clearance, and if you're riding after dark outside town you'll need lights plus a reflective garment. The blood alcohol limit for drivers is 0.5 g/l, so keep that in mind if scooters or cars are also part of your trip.
