Vic doesn't feel like a place built for cars. Its old town unfolds in a tangle of narrow lanes around the Plaça Major de Vic, and a bicycle lets you slip past the twice-weekly market stalls and café tables in a way no bus route ever could. Ten minutes of easy pedaling gets you from the square to the riverside arches of the Pont de Queralt, with the Gurri running below and barely another visitor in sight.
What makes Vic particularly good on two wheels is the contrast on offer. The historic centre is compact and flat, so a basic city bike covers the cathedral, the square and the Roman temple without ever needing to hunt for parking. Push a little further, though, and the Osona countryside opens up — converted rail greenways, quiet reservoirs, sanctuaries tucked into the hills — the kind of scenery that rewards riders happy to go beyond the town walls and climb a bit. If you want to rent a bike in Vic, this mix of an easy old town and a wilder edge is exactly why it works so well.
Good news here: cycling in Spain requires no licence at all, at any age. There's no minimum age set by law either, though some shops may ask for an adult to sign for younger riders. A deposit is standard practice, usually held on a credit card in the renter's name, with the amount depending on the bike — expect it to be higher for an e-bike than for a basic city model. No International Driving Permit is needed to rent a bike in Vic, since none of this involves driving.
A basic city bike starts around 3 EUR per day in low season, rising to 10–20 EUR per day in high season for standard bikes. E-bikes and premium road or mountain bikes typically run 20–35 EUR per day.
If your dates fall in July, August or Easter week, book ahead — this is when both prices and demand for a scooter or bike hire in Vic run highest. For a better balance of good weather and lower rates, May, June, September and October are the sweet spot. Anyone chasing the cheapest possible rate can look to the low season between November and February, though it's a cooler time to be riding out toward the reservoirs.
Spain drives on the right, and that applies to bikes sharing the road too. A helmet isn't legally required for adult cyclists riding within town, but it becomes compulsory on interurban roads and for anyone under 16 anywhere. Speed limits around Vic top out at 50 km/h in built-up areas, dropping to 30 km/h or even 20 km/h on shared single-lane streets, so traffic rarely moves fast enough to feel threatening. Vehicles overtaking a cyclist must leave at least 1.5 metres of clearance, and if you're out on the reservoir roads after dark, lights and a reflective garment are required. The blood alcohol limit for drivers sharing these roads is 0.5 g/l, so keep that in mind if wine is on the itinerary before you ride back.
