Manresa doesn't announce itself the way Barcelona does, and that's exactly its charm. The old town climbs a hillside above the Cardener river, with the Gothic bulk of the Basílica de la Seu watching over the rooftops and the Pont Vell arching below it in classic postcard fashion. A bicycle lets you drift between the two in minutes, then keep going — along the river, out to the reservoir at Parc de l'Agulla, or further still toward Montserrat's jagged silhouette on the horizon. This is a city built for slow discovery, and two wheels are the natural way to do it.
Manresa's centre is compact and hilly, which makes a car more trouble than it's worth — parking near the old quarter is tight, and the streets around La Seu were never meant for traffic. A bike sidesteps all of that, stringing together the basilica, the bridge and the riverside greenways without a single parking headache. It also opens up day trips that are too far to walk but barely worth renting a car for, like the flat, traffic-free Vía Verda del Llobregat or the long climb toward Montserrat that draws cyclists from across Catalonia.
Good news: no licence is required to rent a bicycle in Manresa, at any age. There's no minimum age set by law either, though some rental operators may ask for ID and set their own age or deposit policy. A deposit, usually blocked on a credit card, is common practice, and you won't need an International Driving Permit for a bike — that's only relevant if you're planning to add a scooter or car to your trip.
Bike rental in Manresa is easy on the budget. Expect around 3–5 EUR per day in low season, rising to 6–10 EUR per day in high season, with premium models running 12–18 EUR per day.
If you can travel outside summer, May–June and September–October give you comfortable riding weather without high-season prices. July and August bring the warmest days and the busiest roads toward Montserrat, so book ahead if that's your window. Come November to February and you'll find the cheapest rates of the year, ideal if you don't mind cooler mornings.
Spain drives on the right. Cyclists must wear a helmet on interurban roads regardless of age, though within Manresa itself it's only compulsory for riders under 16. Urban speed limits sit at 50 km/h generally, dropping to 30 km/h on single-lane streets and 20 km/h where road and pavement share the same level — useful to know if you're sharing narrow old-town lanes with local traffic. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, and vehicles overtaking a cyclist must leave at least 1.5 m of clearance. If you're riding at night outside built-up areas, lights and a reflective garment are required.
