Valencia rewards anyone willing to swap the pavement for two wheels. The city runs on a 9 km ribbon of parkland, the Jardín del Turia, laid into the old riverbed and completely closed to cars — pedal it from the old town gates all the way to the futuristic domes of the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias, then keep going until the streets open onto Playa de la Malvarrosa. It's the kind of ride that makes a first-time visitor feel like they've cracked the city's secret shortcut.
What makes Valencia genuinely made for a bike is its geometry: flat as a table, compact enough to cross end to end in under an hour, and threaded with one of the best cycling networks in Spain. The old riverbed lets you skip every traffic light in the historic centre, and dedicated lanes carry you straight on to the beach or south to the rice paddies of the Albufera — routes that would be a slog on foot and pointless in a car once you hit the narrow lanes of the old town. If you want to rent a bike in Valencia, this is a city built to reward the choice.
None of this requires a licence. Cycling in Spain has no age restriction and no permit to show at the counter — just a valid form of ID. Some rental shops ask for a small deposit, usually blocked on a credit card, though amounts vary by shop and by bike. Helmets aren't compulsory for adults riding within the city, though we'd still recommend wearing one, especially if you're heading out to the Albufera on busier roads.
Prices move with the seasons. A basic city bike runs roughly EUR 3–6 per day between November and February, climbing to about EUR 8–15 per day from June through September. E-bikes and road bikes sit in the EUR 20–35 per day range year-round.
High season on Spain's mainland falls in July and August, plus Easter week — book ahead if you're travelling then, since the best bikes go first. Low season runs November through March, when prices drop and availability is easy. If you'd rather ride in comfortable weather without the summer crowds, May, June, September and October hit the sweet spot.
Spain drives on the right, and that applies to cyclists too. Helmets are required for anyone under 16 riding within the city, and compulsory for all ages once you leave built-up areas — a rule worth remembering if you're pedalling out to the Albufera. Speed limits in town are generally 30–50 km/h, so bikes keep pace comfortably with traffic in the centre. If you're ever on a scooter or moped instead, the blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to 0.3 g/l for newer riders — worth keeping in mind whichever way you choose to explore. Have a nice trip!
