Benidorm rewards anyone willing to get on two wheels. Roll out along Playa de Poniente at sunrise, when the promenade is still quiet and the sea is doing all the talking, then keep going past the marina and up to the Balcón del Mediterráneo for the view that put this town on the map. From there the coast just keeps unspooling — past Rincón de Loix, along the cliffs of Serra Gelada, all the way to the lighthouse at Albir if your legs are willing.
What makes a bicycle the right call here is Benidorm's shape: a tight, walkable old town wedged between two long, flat beach promenades that stretch for kilometres. Walking that distance eats your afternoon, and a taxi can't get you onto the seafront path anyway. A bike closes that gap, dodges the old town's stairs and summer crowds, and turns a coastal excursion to Altea or Finestrat into an easy half-day trip instead of a logistical headache.
Nothing but the will to ride — no licence is required at any age to hire a bicycle in Spain. Rental shops in Benidorm typically ask for a valid ID or passport, and some set a minimum age of their own, often around 12–16 for riding unaccompanied. A deposit is common, usually blocked on a card in the renter's name, with the amount depending on the shop and the bike. Since no driving licence is needed, an International Driving Permit doesn't apply here either.
A basic city bike runs from EUR 3–5 per day in low season up to EUR 10–15 per day in high season, while an e-bike or road bike in peak season typically costs EUR 18–25 per day.
High season runs through July and August, when the promenades are busiest and prices sit at their yearly peak. Low season stretches from November to March, with the lowest prices of the year but reduced opening hours at some rental shops. If you want warm weather without the crowds or the top prices, aim for late spring or September.
Spain drives on the right, same as most of mainland Europe. Cyclists don't need a helmet within town limits once they're over 16, though it's required on interurban roads regardless of age — and it's simply good sense on the Serra Gelada cliff path either way. Urban speed limits sit at 50 km/h, dropping to 30 km/h or even 20 km/h on shared single-lane streets, so cars generally aren't moving fast around you. The blood alcohol limit for drivers is 0.5 g/l, so if you're renting a bike after a few drinks by the beach, you're on far safer ground than getting behind a wheel.
