Santander rewards anyone willing to explore it on two wheels. Start along the bay at the Jardines de Pereda and you're already riding toward the Centro Botín, then on past the harbour to Playa de los Peligros before the promenade opens onto the wide sands of Playa del Sardinero. Loop out to the Palacio de la Magdalena and its peninsula, where cliffs and small beaches sit just minutes from the pedals, and you'll understand why so many visitors choose to rent a bike in Santander rather than wait for a bus.
The city is compact, mostly flat, and built around its bay, with a dedicated coastal path connecting the centre, the Magdalena peninsula and the Sardinero beaches without ever forcing you onto a busy road. That makes a city or hybrid bike a genuinely better choice here than a car — parking is scarce, distances are short, and the passenger ferry across the bay even lets you wheel your bike straight onto it for a longer ride to Somo.
Bicycles in Spain don't require a licence at any age, so renting is as simple as showing up. Most rental shops ask for a minimum age of 16 or 18 and a valid ID or passport, and some may hold a small deposit on a credit card. No International Driving Permit is needed for a bicycle.
Prices move with the season. Expect around 3-6 EUR per day in low season, rising to 10-15 EUR per day in high season, with premium hybrid or electric models running 15-25 EUR per day.
High season runs through July and August, plus Easter week, when the promenade and beaches fill up and prices climb toward the top of the range. Low season stretches from November to March, with the calmest, cheapest riding. If you want the mild weather without the crowds, May-June and September-October are the sweet spot, and it's worth booking a little ahead for July and August.
Spain drives on the right. Cyclists aren't required to wear a helmet within city limits once you're 16 or older, though it's compulsory outside built-up areas regardless of age — worth keeping on anyway along the coastal roads. In town, speed limits drop as low as 20-30 km/h on shared single-lane streets, so bikes keep easy pace with traffic. Riding after drinking follows the same 0.5 g/l blood alcohol limit as driving, and vehicles overtaking you must leave at least 1.5 m of clearance.
