Torremolinos rewards anyone who trades the bus stop for two wheels. Coast the flat seafront path from Playa del Bajondillo to the fishing-quarter tables of Playa de la Carihuela, and you cover in twenty easy minutes what would take an hour of weaving through beach crowds on foot. The Costa del Sol sun, the smell of grilled sardines from the chiringuitos, the sea always on one side — this is a town built for a slow, scenic ride, not a rushed sightseeing tour.
What makes it work so well is the geography itself. Torremolinos is compact and largely flat along its signature Paseo Marítimo, so a bike easily strings together its beach neighbourhoods and the old town without a car. Summer parking is a nightmare here, and walking between Bajondillo, La Carihuela and Playamar in the midday heat wears thin fast — a bike sidesteps both problems and turns the whole coastline into one loop.
Good news: no licence is required to rent a bicycle in Spain, at any age. Rental shops typically ask for ID and sometimes a modest deposit, occasionally blocked on a credit card, but the paperwork is minimal compared with a scooter or car. If you're travelling from outside the EU, you won't need an International Driving Permit for a bicycle at all — that's only relevant for motorised rentals.
Prices swing quite a bit with the season. In low season a standard bicycle runs around 3–6 EUR per day, while in high season, when the coast fills up, expect 8–15 EUR per day. E-bikes and premium hybrid or road models sit higher, typically 15–25 EUR per day.
July and August bring the crowds, the heat and the highest prices, so book a few days ahead if you're visiting then. November through March is the quiet, budget-friendly low season on the Spanish mainland, and May–June or September–October hit the sweet spot: mild weather, thinner crowds and prices that haven't yet climbed to peak.
Spain drives on the right. Cyclists must wear a helmet on interurban roads regardless of age, though within town it's compulsory only for riders under 16 — we'd still recommend wearing one everywhere. Urban speed limits in Spain top out at 50 km/h, dropping to 30 km/h or even 20 km/h on shared single-lane streets, so traffic moves slowly and predictably around cyclists. Vehicles overtaking you must leave at least 1.5 m of clearance, and riding after alcohol carries the same 0.5 g/l limit as driving. Keep to the seafront path where you can, and Torremolinos is about as relaxed as coastal cycling gets.
