Picture swapping the coastal traffic queue for open air and the wind in your face: that's what a quad brings to Villajoyosa (La Vila Joiosa). Start where the town shows off its best side, along the pastel fishermen's houses of the Casco Antiguo, then head out past Playa del Paradís toward the cliffs of Serra Gelada, where the road climbs above the sea and Benidorm's skyline shrinks behind you. A quad turns this coast into a proper adventure rather than a drive-by.
Villajoyosa sits at an odd crossroads: the coast road toward Benidorm and Calpe is busy, narrow in places and short on parking, while inland the terrain climbs fast into the hills around Guadalest and Confrides. A car struggles to park where you actually want to stop, and a scooter runs out of muscle on the long mountain grades. A quad is compact enough for the coast and torquey enough for the climbs, and it can also duck onto the dirt tracks threading through Serra Gelada that no rental car will touch.
Road-legal quads generally require a standard driving licence, and most rental desks will simply ask for your car licence rather than a specific motorcycle category. If you're travelling on a non-EU licence, bring an International Driving Permit along with your home licence, as it's commonly requested at the counter. Expect a minimum age of 18 or 21 depending on the operator and vehicle size, plus a deposit blocked on a credit card in your name — the amount varies by company and quad class, so it's worth checking at booking.
A basic single-seat quad runs from EUR 15 to EUR 25 per day in low season, and EUR 35 to EUR 55 per day in high season, occasionally more if bundled with a guided tour. Larger two-seat or higher-cc models cost EUR 60 to EUR 90 per day.
High season runs through July and August, when Costa Blanca crowds peak and prices sit at their highest — booking a few weeks ahead is wise if you want a specific model. Low season stretches from November to February, when quiet roads and the lowest daily rates make it easy to book just a day or two out. May, June, September and October split the difference nicely: warm weather, thinner crowds, and prices well below peak.
Spain drives on the right, and helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger at all times. Speed limits top out at 90 km/h on conventional roads outside town and drop to 50 km/h, and often 30 km/h, on urban streets, so keep an eye out as you pass through village centres like Confrides. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightening to 0.3 g/l for less-experienced drivers, and handheld phone use while riding is banned.
