Córdoba rewards anyone who leaves the tour bus behind. Swing along the Guadalquivir on two wheels and the city opens up fast: the Mezquita-Catedral rises over the water, the honey-colored Puente Romano carries you across for the classic postcard shot, and within minutes you're weaving toward the flower-draped lanes of the old Judería. A motorcycle lets you catch the morning light on the mosque's arches, then be twenty minutes out of town chasing curves through olive groves before lunch — a pace no bus tour or taxi queue can match.
The old town's medieval street plan wasn't built with cars in mind: it's a tangle of one-way loops, tight corners and parking that's scarce and pricey near anything worth seeing. A scooter slips through all of it and parks steps from the Mezquita. Once you're beyond the walls, the appeal only grows — the roads out to Medina Azahara, the Sierra Morena foothills and the Subbética villages twist through genuinely scenic countryside that's far more fun ridden than endured from a bus window.
For anything up to 125cc you'll need an A1 licence (from age 16); larger machines call for an A2 or full A licence depending on power. Rental companies here typically set their own minimum age, often 18 or 21, and will usually ask that you've held your licence for a minimum period. If your licence isn't from the EU, bring an International Driving Permit along with your home licence — most desks ask to see both. Expect a deposit blocked on a credit card in your name; the amount depends on the bike class.
Budget around EUR 25-35 per day for a small 125cc scooter in low season, rising to EUR 45-70 in high season for the same class. Bigger or premium motorcycles can run EUR 70-120 or more per day even outside peak months.
If you're chasing the lowest prices, aim for the low season roughly November through March. Spain's high season runs July and August, plus Easter week, when Córdoba's own summer heat and tourist numbers both spike — book a couple of weeks ahead if you're arriving then. May-June and September-October hit the sweet spot: comfortable riding temperatures, thinner crowds, and prices well below the July-August peak.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers on mopeds and motorcycles at all times, and dipped headlights must stay on day and night. Speed limits top out at 90 km/h on conventional roads and drop to 50 km/h in town, down to 30 km/h on single-lane urban streets — mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and can't use motorways. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, lower at 0.3 g/l if you've held your licence less than two years. Handheld phones and headphones are off-limits while riding.
