Picture this: the grey wall of the Peñón de Ifach rising straight out of the sea, and you on a scooter, free to stop wherever the coast asks you to. Calp rewards exactly that kind of movement — a quick ride out to the salt lagoon in the morning, tapas by Playa de la Fossa at lunch, and a sunset climb up to the Morro de Toix viewpoint before dinner. Renting here isn't a logistics decision, it's the difference between seeing Calpe and actually living in it for a few days.
The old town's lanes are narrow and parking a car near them is more trouble than it's worth, while the sights that make Calp worth visiting — Ifach, the coast road to Altea and Moraira, the twisting climb to Toix — sit just beyond comfortable walking distance. Traffic here is light to moderate, mostly along coastal and secondary roads, so a scooter never feels like a fight. Distances between attractions run ten to thirty minutes, short enough to string together in one afternoon and far enough that a bicycle in the summer heat starts to feel like a chore. If you're weighing whether to **rent a scooter in Calp**, this is really the whole case for it.
For a 50cc moped you'll need an AM licence — a full category B car licence also covers it. For a 125cc scooter you need an A1 licence, or a Spanish/EU category B held for at least three years, though that route only works inside Spain, so most non-EU visitors will need a proper motorcycle licence instead. If your licence isn't from the EU/EEA, bring an International Driving Permit along with your home licence — rental desks commonly ask for it. Expect rental companies to set their own minimum age, often 18 or 21, and to block a deposit on a credit card in your name; the amount depends on the vehicle and operator.
Prices swing a lot across the year. In low season you're looking at roughly 5–10 EUR per day, high season runs 20–35 EUR per day, and a premium or larger-cc model can reach 30–50 EUR per day.
High season on the Costa Blanca means July and August, plus Easter week, when prices peak and scooters get booked up early. Low season runs November through March with the cheapest rates, but if you want good weather without high-season crowds and prices, aim for May, June, September or October — this is generally the best window to ride. Booking a week or two ahead is sensible in summer; outside that, availability is usually easy to find.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on mopeds and scooters, at all times and on every road. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, dropping to 30 km/h on single-lane urban roads, and 90 km/h on the open roads you'll take out toward Altea or Toix — mopeds themselves are capped at 45 km/h and can't use motorways. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightened to 0.3 g/l for riders with less than two years' experience. Lights stay on day and night, and handheld phones are off-limits while riding.
