Picture this: cobblestone lanes fanning out from the porticoed Plaça Major, church bells drifting over rooftops, and a whole medieval town small enough to feel intimate but spread out enough that walking gets old fast. That's Vic. Rent a scooter here and the Roman Temple, the cathedral, and the countryside beyond all fall within easy reach, with the turquoise waters of the Sau Reservoir waiting just twenty kilometres down the road.
Vic's old town wasn't built with cars in mind — its arcaded streets are narrow, its parking scarce, and a scooter slips through both without a second thought. Once you're past the centre, the Plana de Vic opens into rolling farmland and quiet backroads that lead toward the villages and viewpoints of Collsacabra, terrain a scooter handles comfortably without needing anything heavier.
For a 50cc moped you need an AM licence, or any full car licence covers it. For a 125cc scooter, non-EU visitors generally need an A1 motorcycle licence, since the Spanish rule letting B-licence holders ride 125cc after three years only applies within Spain. Rental companies usually set their own minimum age, often 18 or 21, and will ask for a deposit blocked on a credit card. If your licence isn't from the EU, bring an International Driving Permit along with your home licence.
Average rental prices run from 5-8 EUR per day in low season up to 10-15 EUR per day in high season, with premium models reaching 18-25 EUR per day.
High season on the Spanish mainland runs through July and August, plus Easter week, when demand — and prices — peak. Low season stretches from November to March, when rates drop to their lowest. If you'd rather ride in comfortable weather without the crowds or the premium, aim for May, June, September or October.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers on mopeds and motorcycles at all times, and headlights must stay on day and night. Speed limits top out at 90 km/h on open roads and drop to 50 km/h in town, with mopeds capped at 45 km/h and barred from motorways. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, lowered to 0.3 g/l for riders with less than two years' experience. Handheld phones and headphones are off-limits while riding.
