Picture the coast road unspooling in front of you, sea on one side, pine-covered hills on the other, and nothing between you and Platja Cristall but a few minutes of open road. That's the appeal of getting around Miami Platja on two wheels: pick up your scooter near the centre, get the feel of it on the short flat ride down to the beach, then keep going as far as the day takes you — along the sand at Platja Llarga, up into the hills, or up the coast to Cambrils for lunch. You set the pace, not a bus timetable.
That freedom matters more here than in most resort towns, because the things worth seeing aren't clustered downtown — they're strung out along several kilometres of coast and tucked into the hills behind it. Local buses run thin and infrequent, and walking rules out anywhere past the next beach. A scooter closes those gaps in minutes, handles the flat coastal stretches with no effort, and still has the legs for the steeper inland roads up to Mont-roig's chapel or the reservoir, where a bicycle would leave you drenched in the summer heat.
For a 50cc moped you need at least an AM licence (or any full car licence), and for a 125cc scooter you'll need an A1 motorcycle licence — a Spanish car licence only covers 125cc locally, so most visitors from outside the EU should bring a motorcycle licence rather than rely on it. If your licence isn't from the EU or EEA, carry an International Driving Permit alongside it, since rental desks routinely ask for one. Expect a minimum age of 18 or 21 depending on the vehicle, and a deposit blocked on a credit card in your name.
Average prices for a standard scooter run from around 5-10 EUR per day in low season up to 15-25 EUR per day in high season, with premium models reaching 25-40 EUR per day.
High season on this stretch of coast runs through July and August, plus Easter week, when demand and prices both peak — book a few weeks out if you want your pick of scooters. Low season stretches from November to March, with the best combination of good weather and thin crowds usually falling in May-June and September-October, when you can often book closer to your travel dates.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any moped or motorcycle, at all times, and scooters must run with dipped headlights on day and night. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in town, dropping to 30 km/h on single-lane urban roads, while mopeds are capped at 45 km/h. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, lowered to 0.3 g/l for riders with under two years' experience — and handheld phones or earphones aren't allowed while riding.
