Picture Lanzarote's black volcanic fields opening up around you, the wind off the Atlantic in your face, no bus timetable to work around. Two wheels turn the island into your own itinerary — one morning weaving toward the lava tunnels at Cueva de los Verdes, the next afternoon chasing the coast road down to the golden coves of Playa de Papagayo. This is an island built for slow, curious exploring, and a scooter lets you do exactly that.

Lanzarote is barely 60 km end to end, and outside the busier stretches of Arrecife, Costa Teguise and Puerto del Carmen, traffic is light and roads are smooth and well-signed. That makes it easy to string together volcanic craters, clifftop viewpoints and quiet beaches in a single day — no need to commit to a full-size car just to get around. If you're weighing up a **scooter rental in Lanzarote**, the island's compact size and easy roads are exactly why it works so well.

Top 10 things to see in Lanzarote by scooter

  1. Timanfaya National Park — the island's iconic volcanic landscape, where the Ruta de los Volcanes and the geothermal demonstrations at Islote de Hilario make an unmissable loop.
  2. Mirador del Río — César Manrique's clifftop viewpoint at the northern tip of the island, with sweeping views over La Graciosa and the Chinijo archipelago.
  3. Jameos del Agua — a volcanic cave turned cultural space near Órzola, an easy ride from the north coast.
  4. Cueva de los Verdes — dramatic lava tube caves just down the road from Jameos del Agua, simple to combine in one loop.
  5. Playa de Papagayo — sheltered golden coves near Playa Blanca, reached via a scenic coastal road that's a favourite scooter destination.
  6. Playa de Famara — a long wild beach beneath dramatic cliffs on the northwest coast, popular with surfers and a scenic ride from Teguise or Órzola.
  7. Jardín de Cactus — Manrique's cactus garden in Guatiza, a compact and popular stop along the LZ-1 heading north.
  8. Teguise old town — the former island capital, with a historic centre and Sunday market, a short inland ride from Costa Teguise.
  9. Los Hervideros & El Golfo — volcanic sea cliffs with crashing surf next to the green lagoon of Charco de los Clicos, both on the same southwest coastal stretch.
  10. Mirador de Haría — a winding mountain road up to the palm-filled Valley of a Thousand Palms, one of the best scenic routes in the north.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Lanzarote?

For mopeds up to 50cc, an AM licence is enough (minimum age 15 in Spain), and a full car licence also covers you. For 125cc scooters you'll need an A1 licence, or a Spanish/EU category B licence held for at least three years — that route only works inside Spain, so most non-EU visitors will need a proper motorcycle licence instead. If your licence isn't from the EU/EEA, bring an International Driving Permit along with your home licence, as rental desks commonly ask for it. Rental companies usually set their own minimum age, often 18 or 21, and will block a deposit on a credit card in your name.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Lanzarote?

Average rental prices run from EUR 5-10 per day in low season up to EUR 12-20 per day in high season, with larger-engine or newer models from EUR 20-30 per day.

  • Prices climb in December-February and again in July-August, the island's busiest windows.
  • May-June and October-November are the best value, with the widest choice of scooters still available.

When to book a rental scooter in Lanzarote?

Unlike mainland Spain, Lanzarote and the rest of the Canary Islands run busy through the northern winter, so December to February is peak season alongside the July-August summer rush — book ahead for both. If you'd rather ride when prices are lower and the island is quieter, aim for May-June or October-November.

Local traffic rules in Lanzarote

Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers on mopeds and motorcycles, on every road, at all times. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, dropping to 30 km/h on single-lane urban roads, while mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and can't use motorways. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightened to 0.3 g/l for riders with under two years' experience. Scooters and mopeds must run with dipped headlights day and night, and handheld phones or headphones are off-limits while riding.
