Granada rewards anyone willing to climb. One minute you're weaving through the city center below the Catedral de Granada, the next you're winding up the cobbled lanes of the Albaicín toward the Mirador de San Nicolás, where the Alhambra glows red against the Sierra Nevada. A scooter turns that climb into pure pleasure instead of a slog, and it puts every side street, viewpoint and hillside cave neighborhood within easy reach.
This is a city built on a hill, criss-crossed by narrow, steep, cobbled streets that were laid out centuries before cars existed. Parking in the Albaicín or Sacromonte is a headache for anything bigger than two wheels, and a scooter slips through where a car simply can't. When you're ready to go further, Sierra Nevada is close enough — around 30 to 45 minutes away — for an easy day trip without needing anything larger than a scooter.
For mopeds up to 50cc, an AM licence covers you (minimum age 15 in Spain), and a full car licence also works. For 125cc scooters, you'll need an A1 licence or a category B licence held for at least three years — but that B-based route only counts inside Spain, so most non-EU visitors will need an actual motorcycle licence instead. If your licence isn't from the EU/EEA, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it, since rental desks commonly ask for one. Rental companies typically set their own minimum age, often 18 or 21, and will block a deposit on your credit card.
Prices swing a fair amount across the year:
June through September is Granada's busiest and priciest stretch, driven by summer tourism and the Feria de Corpus — book ahead if you're travelling then. November to February is the quietest and cheapest window. If you want good weather without the crowds or the top prices, May, June or September tend to hit the sweet spot.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on mopeds and scooters, on every road, at all times. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in built-up areas, dropping to 30 km/h on single-lane urban streets — and mopeds are capped at 45 km/h and kept off motorways entirely. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, reduced to 0.3 g/l for riders with less than two years' experience. Scooters and motorcycles must run with dipped headlights day and night, and handheld phones or headphones are off-limits while riding.
