Picture skipping the traffic crawl along the Costa del Sol and riding straight from your hotel to Playa de El Bajondillo for a morning coffee, then further down the coast to the marina at Benalmádena before lunch. That is what a motorcycle gives you in Torremolinos: freedom from bus timetables and parking headaches, and the reach to string together beach towns, hilltop villages and viewpoints in a single day. A short ride out to Puerto Marina or the sweeping panorama from Monte Calamorro is easy on two wheels and awkward any other way.
This stretch of coast is built for it. Torremolinos and its neighbours sit close together but the roads between them get busy and parking fills up fast in high season, so a scooter or motorcycle lets you cut through where cars queue. The coast road itself is flat and forgiving for less experienced riders, while inland routes climbing toward Mijas or out to El Chorro turn twisty enough to reward a bike with corners a car just can't enjoy, plus roadside parking at viewpoints cars can't reach at all.
The licence you need depends on engine size. An A1 licence covers machines up to 125cc from age 16; A2 covers restricted-power bikes from 18; a full A licence is required for anything unrestricted. If you're travelling on a non-EU licence, bring an International Driving Permit along with your home licence, since rental desks commonly ask for both. Most companies set their own minimum age, often 18 or 21, and will block a deposit on a credit card in your name before handing over the keys.
Average rental prices run around 25 EUR per day in low season and 35-45 EUR during high season, with premium models reaching 45-70 EUR per day.
High season runs through July and August, when demand and prices both peak along this coast. Low season stretches from November to March, with the best value and quieter roads. If you want good weather without summer prices, aim for the shoulder months either side of peak season, and book ahead if you're travelling in July or August since the best bikes go first.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers on mopeds and motorcycles, on every road, at all times, and dipped headlights must stay on day and night. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, dropping to 30 km/h on single-lane urban roads, and 90 km/h on conventional roads outside town. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightened to 0.3 g/l for riders with less than two years' experience.
